Job Summary

Provides clinical direction for all aspects of patient care in an acute inpatient setting, fostering patient/family centered care. Demonstrates clinical competency utilizing evidence-based practices/research in all areas of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and outcomes. Incorporates knowledge of safety protocols, cost containment and quality improvement throughout the nursing process. Identifies patient, unit and organizational priorities and incorporates into the nursing process.
Adheres to all compliance and policy/procedures of the organization including, but not limited to: licensure renewal, assigned training, employee health screenings, time and attendance policy, dress code policy, patient confidentiality, infection control, medication administration. Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory agency requirements (TJC, DHEC, CMS). Provides care within the scope of the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act.

The acute inpatient setting usually requires staff to be scheduled for a significant amount of shift, weekend, holiday, and on-call work.

Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology (EP) Labs

Our Cath lab and EP labs are in our Free-standing Heart Hospital. The EP lab consist of 2 EP suites, and we are in the process of opening an additional space for EP as our program is growing. We currently have 4 dedicated EP physicians and are in the process of adding more physicians. We do all types of ablations, device implants and watchmen in our EP labs.

Accountabilities

  • Accomplishes monitoring duties.  Understands mechanics of arrhythmias.  Understands mapping techniques for ablation of arrhythmias.  Monitors patient's electrocardiogram and reports rhythm disturbances to physician.  Monitor and record intracardiac and intravascular pressures.20%

  • Accomplishes scrub duties.  Practices sterile techniques.  Ensures tasks are accomplished efficiently and accurately.  Assists and anticipates needs of physician.  20%

  • Prepares procedure room using infection control guidelines.  Ensures radiation protection techniques are followed.  Performs accurate set-up of EP equipment.  Ensures proper use of RF generator and stimulator.  Accurately places electrodes, defibrillator and appropriate ground  pads on patient for monitoring.  Checks prep for accuracy.  Checks patient chart for correct permit.  Performs quality equipment checks daily.15%

  • Assists with recovery duties.  Obtains hemostasis as needed.  Safely returns patients to room or nursing unit after procedure when necessary.  Checks for pedal pulse and bleeding.  Ensures that patient is comfortable. Ensures other team members are informed of patient status as needed. 10%

  • Orders and restocks supplies as needed.  Retrieves supplies from Central Supply and Material Services as needed.  Compares case load and on-hand supplies and obtains needed supplies.  Ensures instruments are cleaned and prepared for Central Supply per department Policy and Infection Control. 4%

  • Uses the nursing process in order to gather patient information, formulate a plan of care, implement the plan of care, and evaluate and/or revise the care plan.  Incorporates patient and family learning needs and teaches accordingly.10%

  • Ensures appropriate surveillance of assigned patients; identifies barriers related to specific care issues and seeks assistance as appropriate, thereby maintaining quality and patient safety. 5%

  • Maintains professional licensure and takes personal accountability for maintaining competency through education and professional activities.5%

  • For those that have their RCIS, the following job duties from the RCIS Scope of Practice may be included after competency demonstrated to physician:  Venous access, vascular sheath exchange, suturing of implantable cardiac device pocket, and manipulation of intracardiac catheters with physician supervision. 5%

  • Successful completion of the PH Arrhythmia Competency Exam. 1%

  • Assumes charge duties in the absence of the Supervisor. 5%

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate's Degree - Nursing

  • 2 years Critical Care, plus 6 months EP Lab

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • SC Registered Nurse

Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

  • BLS and ACLS

  • Basic Computer Skills

  • Knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier)

  • Data Entry skills

  • Mathematical Skills

  • Patient Equipment

  • RCIS or RCES preferred
