Job Summary
Under the direction of a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with department policies and procedures. As an active member of the pharmacy team, technicians may interpret and prepare medication orders, make deliveries to nursing units, compound medications (sterile and non-sterile), and perform quality assurance responsibilities. A pharmacy technician certified may participate in Tech-Check-Tech functions as well.Accountabilities
Contibutes to an efficient work environment
a) Answers the telephone within three rings.
b) Screens and prioritizes telephone calls.
c) Answers requests at the pharmacy window
d) Adjusts priorities to accommodate changes in work demands
e) Maintains departmental facilities, equipment, and material in a condition to promote efficiency, health, and safety of patients and staff.
f) Assists in keeping the pharmacy free of clutter and dust.
Assists in interpreting, clarifying, and entering into the pharmacy computer orders for medications and/or supplies.
a) Clarifies orders with pharmacist and/or nurse when order is unclear.
b) Enters patient demographic and clinical information into the pharmacy computer as required.
c) Enters prescription information into the computer, generates labels, and patient education leaflets when appropriate.
d) Consults pharmacist to review and respond to computerized clinical prompts.
e) Follows up with physician offices, nurses, and/or patients to ensure that all medications and supplies for patient care are provided as requested.
f) Inputs physician stock order requests and charges appropriately

Non-sterile drug preparation/compounding.
a) Compounds ointments, creams, oral solutions and medications.
b) Adheres with regulatory guidelines for documenting pharmacy compounding
Fills, labels and appropriately packages medications and pharmaceuticals.
a) Assists in maintaining workflow in an appropriate, productive, and prioritized manner.
b) Accurately assembles medications, pharmaceuticals, and supplies for pharmacist to check.
c) Restocks medication following fills in appropriate location and assesses stock for reordering needs.
d) Assigns medications to FF200, shelf, or carousel when new medications arrive.
Handles out-window effectively, exceeds patient expectations with customer service.
a) Operates the cash register to accurately accept payments for pharmacy products and services rendered.
b) Assures out-window procedures by using two patient identifiers, and verifying the accuracy of the prescription orders.
c) Complies with all identification requirements needed for control medication pick-up.
d) Identifies and complies with pharmacist requirements to offer counsel on all new prescriptions and questions regarding OTC products.
e) Maintains OTC stock, ABC ordering, fronting, and cleaning OTC shelving on a regular basis.
Demonstrates proper use of pharmacy automation.
a) Basic problem solving for QS1 prescription (RX) processing and point-of-sale (POS) software.
b) Basic problem solving for Automed involving the Fast Fill 200, check stations, carousel, and scanning devices.
Maintains inventory so that the pharmacy remains stocked with essential pharmaceuticals and supplies.
a) Generates and processes orders daily and as needed.
b) Receives inventory, rotates and stocks to ensure that out-dated medications are pulled from the shelves.
c) Maintains inventory order points and levels as established by the department.
d) Generates and receives emergency drug and supply orders.
e) Returns out-dated, expired, and overstock pharmaceuticals for credit when possible; appropriately disposing of medications, under the supervision of a pharmacist, when appropriate.
f) Conducts routine follow-up on all overdue shipments and works directly with the vendor to resolve problems.
