Job Summary

Under the direction of a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician performs pharmacy-related functions in support of providing medication access to patients of Prisma Health. This position will have primary responsibility to identify and to work as a patient advocate in order to provide medications to qualifying patients. In addition, this technician would be responsible for maintaining records to document system program benefit

Accountabilities

  • Aid in development of processes/procedures necessary in establishing a  medication assistance program as well as specialty pharmacy services. This will include:

    a) developing policies/procedures for medication assistance workflow to support pharmacy operations

    b) creating a pharmacy assistance program for the uninsured/underinsured patients of our system

    c) refining discharge medication assistance opportunities

    d) maintaining the Dispensary of Hope Formulary

    e) optimizing the utilization of manufacturer and foundational assistance programs

    f) tracking of cost savings/cost avoidance of all programs

    g) overseeing med assitance software and customizing it to our purposes

    h) developing all enrollment forms, marketing information, etc. for medication assistance. - 30%
  • Technician acts as a liaison between the patient and assistance programs, provider, and/or support agencies.

    a) Accepts verbal non-controlled prescription orders and facilitates non-controlled prescription transfers to and from other pharmacies

    b) Clarifies orders with pharmacist and/or nurse when order is unclear.

    c) Performs benefit investigations

    d) Obtaining prior authorizations for medications

    e) Enrolling patients in both manufacturer patient assistance programs and copay assistance programs (foundations, manufacturers, etc)

    f) Documents assistance in EMR and patient assistance software

    g) Facilitates/schedules mail-order delivery of medications

    h) Follows up with physician offices, nurses, and/or patients to ensure that all medications and supplies for patient care are provided as requested.                                            

    i) Understands and is compliant with all state and federal laws, regulations, policies/procedures, and guidelines as related to manufacturer assistance programs.  - 25% 
  • Actively participates in training new personnel & ensures compliance.

    a) Maintains an appropriate training program for new medication assistance technicians

    b) Creates a detailed training manual for new staff

    c) Assists the Pharmacy Manager with the interview process for medication assistance technicians. - 10%
  •  Maintains excellent customer service skills in communicating with many different medication assistance customers including:

    a) patients and caregivers

    b) office practice personnel

    c) prescribers

    d) pharmaceutical industry     - 10%
  • Designs/participates in quality improvement or other projects as needed to develop and achieve best practices and prepares program utilization and other reports as requested by the system - 10%
  • Develops/maintains relationship with the specialty pharmacy team as it relates to specialty pharmacy. - 10%
  • Aids in developing and ongoing marketing plan for Prisma Health medication assistance as we expand services. - 5%

                                                          

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • No previous experience required

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • Registered as State certified with the SC Board of Pharmacy

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Retail pharmacy IS/software - Required

  • Familiarity with 3rd party payment plans - Required

  • SCBOP/DHEC/DEA rules/regulations - Required

  • Excellent communication skills, team-orientation and customer service skills required. 

  • Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively with Health-System and other Pharmacy staff members. 

  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions, adapts to changes in workload and schedule. 

  • Ability to set priorities and solve problems. 

  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency requests  - Required

  • Ability to work outdoors as business needs occur .

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time or walk frequently as business needs occur. - Required
