Sr. Manager, Supply Chain Quality Assurance

Job Purpose

The Sr Manager, Quality Assurance guides quality and food safety efforts across several categories within Panera's supply chain.  This team leader is responsible for implementing and managing Food Safety and Quality Assurance programs and strategy in accordance with Panera policies, federal, state and local regulations and is responsible for the professional development of Panera's QA team members.

Duties & Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Manges specific ingredient/item categories and respective suppliers
  • Manages suppliers to ensure products and processes meet Panera Supplier Quality Expectations, product specification, food safety, Clean Food initiatives and Current Good Manufacturing Practice on a continuous basis
  • Monitors 3rd party audit reports to ensure suppliers/products are in compliance to GFSI standards
  • Responsible for approving and maintaining up-to-date supplier FSQA documentation
  • Provides technical expertise and support to new product development, on projects designed to ensure food safety, improve food quality, optimize products/processes
  • Designs, manages and owns assigned Supply Chain FSQA programs (e.g., warehouse & distribution; animal welfare; sampling & monitoring; supplier improvement program; recall/traceback protocol;  etc)
  • Performs periodic audits of ingredient supplier facilities, distributors, and warehouses
  • Supports product evaluation program for compliance to specification as well as comprehensive review of new ingredients
  • Investigates and provides follow up with suppliers and café operations for foodborne illness, foreign material incidents; implements and brings closure to CAPA programs
  • Examines, reviews and investigates complaint data to identify root cause investigation, to facilitate continuous improvement and to reduce product complaints
  • Supports approval of new and/or alternate suppliers of food products with respect to food safety, quality attributes and product consistency
  • Supports compliance to regulatory requirements and internal policy for restaurant food safety programs
  • Provides technical expertise to cross functional project teams across the organization
  • Assists in serving as liaison to regulatory agencies
  • Contributes to the creation of ingredient specifications and responsible for maintenance of all assigned product specifications

Qualifications (Education & Experience)

Qualifications include:

  • Education: B.S. in Food Science or related science field, required; advanced degree preferred
    • Knowledge of food microbiology, food safety, food defense
    • Working knowledge of quality control systems and programs
  • Skills
    • Strong investigative and analytical skills; demonstrated problem-solver
    • Understanding of food safety regulations, laws and best practice from FDA, USDA
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Proficient in common office and QA software programs
  • Abilities
    • Ability to work cross-functionally with associates throughout the organization
    • Strategic agility, influence management and structured approach to problem solving within a matrixed organization
  • Other characteristics such as personal characteristics
    • Efficient, self-starter and team player with a positive attitude
    • Able to achieve personal and team objectives when working in partially remote arrangements
  • Professional Certification
    • ServSafe food safety certification (or equivalent), or the appropriate background to achieve such
    • HACCP certification, in-depth knowledge of Global Food Safety Certification standards and audit schemes
  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years' experience in food manufacturing and/or foodservice industries
    • Experienced in the latest quality systems for food manufacturing
    • Experience in a broad range of food manufacturing categories desired
    • Experience in auditing food manufacturing facilities
    • Experience in Withdrawal/Recall events
    • Experience in project management with cross-functional teams

Working Conditions

  • Required travel – 30%
