Job Description: 

To develop in each student the skills of critical thinking and to help students learn the knowledge and skills of becoming a veterinary technician presented to them in order for that student to become a positive member of the community.

Essential Job Functions:

1.      Teach a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours per semester for laboratory classes or fifteen (15) credit hours for non-laboratory classes or equivalent service.  This may include evening and online instruction. These classes will be in the Veterinary Technology degree program as assigned.

2.      Maintain student and course records with updates on the learning management system.

3.      Maintain and file current course outlines, objectives, and grading procedures for all courses.

4.      Advise and assist students in selecting appropriate academic courses.

5.      Post and keep office hours as per institutional standards.

6.      May serve as lead instructor.

7.      Implement the institutionally-recommended strategies for retention.

8.      Implement the assessment model.

9.      Serve on special projects and committees.

10.  Assist in the designing and revising of courses and curricula.

11.  Participate in staff development through formal course work, seminars, workshops, professional organizations, or professional literary material

12.  Assists in the designing/revising of courses and curricula.

13.  Exhibit innovative and adaptive instructional methods.

14.  Perform medical, surgical, and husbandry procedures on various domestic species within the limits of one's licensure.

15.  Maintain and revise official syllabi every semester according to OSU-OKC syllabi templates.

16.  Create and maintain documentation of student completion of essential skills.

17.  Advise and assist students in enrollment, student government association activities and job searches.

18.  Participate and support institutional activities when possible.

19.  Assist in the designing/revising of assessment plans/reports, and data management systems.

20.  Cooperate with departmental faculty in the selection of textbooks and teaching materials.

21.  Maintain proficiency in use of modern veterinary equipment/instrumentation.

22.  Assist in recruitment, public relations, correspondence, and marketing of the Veterinary Technology program.

23.  Assist with inventory and equipment maintenance.

24.  Serve as a role model in reinforcing the concept of the veterinary team.

25.  Embrace the team spirit in performance of job functions and relationships with colleagues.

26.  Travel to, perform in and work with employees of off-campus laboratory sites and conferences.

27.  Assist in transportation of students to off-campus laboratory sites and conferences.

28.  Participate in annual commencement and pinning ceremonies.

29.   Fulfill all faculty requirements as noted in the Faculty Handbook.

30.  Completes all mandatory training and participated in RPT recommended level of professional development each year.

31.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) 

Licensure/Certification:
Licensed as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in the state of Oklahoma, or willing to obtain said license if issued in a different state.

Training/Experience:
Must have educational qualifications to teach in subject area or have documented specialty
education/experience to meet tested experience requirements, as per the Higher Learning
commission's publication on Determining Qualified Faculty, and provide leadership in 
academic discipline and/or degree program.  Programs with discipline-specific external
accreditation may have more stringent training and experience requirements.

Applicants for the Veterinary Technology Instructor position must have 7 years' experience as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with primary duties providing services in a clinical (public or private) setting. Teaching/instruction experience in a scientific field and at a post-secondary level is preferred. Candidates must have experience in husbandry, medical and surgical procedures with domestic animals, food producing animals, and equines. Candidates must also possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license, be willing and able to drive a university owned vehicle to off-campus locations and be willing to transport students or other university approved passengers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Teaching Competence – Must be able to create lesson plans, content, presentations, ancillary materials, and assignments to effectively transform information to knowledge for students; have the ability to assess student learning and progress.
• Communication skills – Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with clear, grammatically correct English and prepare complex reports on deadline; requires interaction with supervisors, colleagues, students, alumni, advisory committee members, and the public, using tact, discretion, and independent judgment.
• Computer skills – Must be demonstrably proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), as well as email, internet, and learning management systems.
• Ability to perform computations involving multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction using whole numbers, fractions and percentages.
• Ability to create and present lecture and lab material for presentation in 3-5 hour blocks of time.
  Ability to log, file and post items manually and electronically.
• Knowledge of current instrumentation and equipment used in the veterinary field.
• Knowledge of currently acceptable surgical, restraint, and laboratory techniques.
• Skilled in the handling and restraining of a variety of small and large animal species.
• Skilled in technical support for anesthesia and surgery in a variety of animal species.
• Ability to successfully perform commonly accepted veterinary procedures on common domestic species as they pertain to the Veterinary Technology curriculum and within the limits of one's licensure.
• Ability to interact with supervisors, colleagues, students, alumni, advisory committee members and the public using tact, discretion, diplomacy, and independent judgment.
• Embrace the concept and practice of teamwork and understand and respect the roles of all individuals in a veterinary team.
• Be amenable to occasional changes in work schedule for the purposes of participation in public relations, outreach, student advisement, and other campus activities.

Working Conditions: 

• Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends due to participation in public relations, outreach, student advisement, and other campus activities.

·         Must not be adversely affected by (allergic or sensitive to) formaldehyde, any commonly used veterinary formulations or any commonly encountered domestic species to the extent that such allergy/sensitivity would impair job performance.

·         Must be tuberculosis negative and agree to annual tuberculosis testing at own expense. 

·         Must be rabies vaccinated (assuming Human Pre-exposure Vaccine is available) and maintain routine titer checks and obtain booster vaccines as necessary or agree to sign a waiver of liability.

·    Must be able to work outdoors in typical environmental conditions (rain, heat, cold, wind) with appropriate personal protective equipment.

·     Must be able to work in an often busy and noisy environment with appropriate personal protective equipment used as needed.

·         Must be able to work with and restrain a variety of animals including dogs, cats, cattle, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, birds, reptiles, and lab animals.

·         Must be comfortable working with large groups of people and/or animals.

·         Occasional travel with overnight stays may be necessary.

·    Instruction of required essential skills may involve the use of preserved specimens, radiography equipment, anesthetics, medications, sharp objects, and a variety of animal species.  The instructor is expected to have the knowledge and skills to safely and properly handle all the above.

Physical Requirements:

• ·         Duties require extended periods of sitting, standing, talking, listening and computer usage.
• Position requires some physical ability - may be required to lift/move animals, instructional materials, file boxes, classroom tables, chairs, etc.  Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds unassisted, using proper lifting techniques.
• Individual must be able to stand/walk approximately 7- 8 hours per day to perform commonly accepted veterinary procedures that pertain to the Veterinary Technology curriculum. Position requires frequent to continuous bending/stooping, squatting/crouching and pushing/pulling.
• Position may require working outdoors in inclement weather, under adverse working conditions, in the performance of procedures that pertain to the Veterinary Technology curriculum.
• Must be able to safely manipulate and/or lift animals as necessary to perform tasks related to veterinary care and handling, with appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Must be able to operate manual cattle and horse enclosure and restraint equipment (corral gates, stocks, chutes, head gates, etc.) with appropriate cautions and personal protective equipment.
• Manual dexterity/visual ability to perform common veterinary medical procedures including but not limited to administering injections, placing IV and urinary catheters, positioning patients for various medical and diagnostic procedures, operating microscopes, refractometers and other diagnostic equipment.
