Job Summary:

This position is a 10-month assignment from August 1 through May 31. Duties include assisting American Sign Language (ASL) students and instructors during predetermined lab hours. Additional assignments may include teaching American Sign Language (ASL) courses if qualifications meet HLC criteria.

  

Essential Job Functions:

 

  1. Maintain and update records of available lab resources.
  2. Keep accurate records of students' use of ASL lab and lab resources and provide these records to instructors upon request.
  3. Maintain a non-threatening learning environment for students.
  4. Provide assistance to students and faculty using computer programs and other lab equipment, as needed.
  5. Ensure that lab computers and equipment are in working order.
  6. Tutor ASL students.
  7. Coordinate lab schedule each semester in accordance with the ITP course schedule.
  8. Maintain audio and video resources on servers and other digital storage platforms.
  9. Staying current with development in ASL pedagogy and Deaf Culture.
  10. If teaching courses, follow the expectations of an adjunct professor job description.
  11. Complete all mandatory training and participate in other professional development to support job performance.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Qualification

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
High School diploma/ GED
Bachelor's degree if teaching courses based on HLC requirements.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of one to two years of responsible work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Native-like fluency in ASL with the ability to communicate in other modes of signed language and with students at varying degrees of fluency.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems with the ability to troubleshoot basic technical issues.
  • Basic recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to coordinate with Department Head, faculty, and students to schedule lab activities.
  • Ability to support ASL students to advance their language fluency.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly and effectively, both in person and in writing to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries appropriately.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in an effort to work and communicate effectively with all students, faculty, staff and community partners.
  • High degree of initiative to work independently and also collaborate in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of office technologies including but not limited to: office computers, fax machines, scanners, internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU-OKC and OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated history of ethical and professional behavior.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in American Sign Language.
  •  Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) rating of Advanced Plus or higher.
  • Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) rating of Superior or higher and 2 years experience in teaching ASL related courses in college or postsecondary setting if teaching courses.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends.
  • Work will be performed in an lab environment with a significant amount of public contact, in person, by telephone/videophone, via email, and various communication platforms.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, talking, and listening.
  • Duties require extensive use of computers, telephone/videophone, and other office equipment.
  • Requires possible lifting of up to 25 lbs. (If an object weights more than 45 lbs., OSU-Oklahoma City requires this to be a two-person lift).
