Position Summary:

Promotes, explains, advises and enhances member engagement and participation in NRECA qualified employee benefit plans and NRECA membership and services. Consults with co-op management personnel on all aspects of employee benefit plans. Serves as a liaison for NRECA with its member cooperatives and advises on all aspects of integrated employee benefit plan designs, available program and services options, and developing an overall total compensation strategy.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Within assigned territory (approximately 2 states, and up to 55 co-ops), educates co-op management and co-op employees on the features, benefits and advantages of NRECA Employee Benefits. Cultivates effective professional advisory relationships and serves as the liaison between co-op and NRECA to look for opportunities to grow relationships as well as to address issues.
  • Works with co-ops to retain and expand business. Anticipates co-op needs, particularly relative to employee benefit design information, rate impacts and strategic, total compensation view of employee benefits. Represents NRECA in proposals and implementation of new business, and expansions or renewals of existing business.
  • Visits co-ops in territory regularly and effectively, with at least one physical onsite visit at each co-op per year within the assigned territory. Complements onsite visits with proactive telephone, email and video outreach.  Provides regional web seminars and continued involvement at regional, statewide and other important meetings.
  • Presents to co-ops, employees and industry (in employee meetings, staff meetings, Board Meetings, conferences, statewide meetings, etc.), to provide professional and technical knowledge regarding employee benefit plans.
  • Reviews retirement options for individual employees with referrals to Personal Investment and Retirement Consulting (PIRC) as appropriate.
  • Monitors and reports the level and quality of service provided to co-ops and tracks non-participation for future enrollment in NRECA Employee Benefits programs and services. Investigates and coordinates resolution of co-op issues and concerns and escalates to Regional Director, I&FS senior management and EVP, Member and Association Relations as appropriate.
  • Maintains knowledge of NRECA Employee Benefits programs and services, industry (insurance and financial services) trends, products, delivery systems, and legislative and regulatory activity. Participates in industry-recognized education and certification programs.
  • Analyzes, evaluates, compares, and contrasts employee benefit plans of all types. Where applicable, consults with co-op leadership regarding benefit issues related to mergers, consolidations, subsidiary activities or bargaining negotiations.
  • Provides input to management regarding territory budget and operates within budget guidelines. Files timely contact reports and expense records.
  • Looks for opportunities to promote membership in NRECA, Touchstone Energy Partners and other sponsored programs.
  • Works with compliance, underwriting, and actuarial workgroups on continual changes in employee benefits offerings and variations from standard plans and services identified by co-op management.
  • Responsible for the proper security and disposal of any confidential information that he or she may possess in the course of performing this position's job duties, in accordance with NRECA's Personnel & Administrative Policy and HIPAA Privacy and Security Policies & Procedures Manuals.

Qualifications

Formal Education Required:

Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business Management, Finance preferred.

 

Experience and Certifications Required:

  • 5 or more years of experience working in group employee benefits-related field and/or in financial services/retirement programs.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Life and Health Insurance License preferred.
  • Professional designation including CLU, ChFC, CFP, CFA, CEBS or other similar designations within the employee benefits field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required (as demonstrated by prior work experience):

  • Knowledge of ERISA, FMLA, COBRA and other IRS/DOL regulations and laws related to the administration and management of employee benefit programs.
  • Ability to be persuasive, negotiate, and collaborate with individuals at all levels inside and outside of the organization.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines and multiple projects at various stages of development using effective organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to listen and interpret the customer's needs, de-escalate difficult customer calls, while at the same time researching the issue and applying broad business and technical knowledge to meet the customer's satisfaction.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse membership, employees and/or vendors in a clear and precise manner.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point) in the day-to-day essential duties of the job.
  • Ability to operate various office equipment such as personal computer, copier, printer, fax machine or other job-related equipment.
  • Ability to provide service excellence by building relationships, being resourceful, responsive and respectful.
  • Ability to travel and reside in the assigned territory close to a major airport.

 

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
