Summer 2026 Field Engineering Intern  

 

As a Field Engineering Intern, you'll work with our Maintenance of Way and Structures (MW&S) field crews, officers, and staff on a variety of hands-on projects. Primary responsibilities include assisting with track inspections and performing maintenance across line-of-road and yard locations.

 

Interns will gain exposure to:

  • Train and track dynamics
  • Track inspection procedures
  • Basic railroad construction and maintenance operations
  • Field management and leadership skills

This internship is designed to immerse students in the day-to-day operations of MW&S and help determine if a career in field operations is the right fit.

Work Environment

  • Relocation may be required within our 22-state network; interns who relocate are eligible for a $850/month housing stipend
  • Typical schedule: 7 AM to 5 PM, Monday–Friday, with additional extended hours, on-call hours, and occasional overnight travel
  • This is a salaried position
  • Expect to be outdoors 95% of the time and on your feet daily

Education & Experience

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or graduate degree
  • Preferred majors: Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Construction Management, General Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biosystems Engineering
  • Other relevant degrees will be considered

Compensation

  • Compensation is based upon your Fall 2026 class standing
  • Freshman (≤27 credits): $3,430/month
  • Sophomore (28–59 credits): $3,768/month
  • Junior (60–89 credits): $4,107/month
  • Senior (≥90 credits): $4,347/month
  • Graduate Student: $5,126/month
  • Housing stipend: $850/month (for qualifying interns, this stipend is taxed)

Approximate Internship Timeline

  • Week 1: Internship begins around May 20, 2026, in McDonough, GA for training
  • Weeks 2-10: Work at your assigned internship location
  • Week 11: Internship Closeout event location TBD
