NASCAR seeks a talented professional to join in the position of Engineer, Safety Systems based in Concord, NC
The Engineer, Safety Systems is a hands-on position that uses engineering principles to develop, design, coordinate, conduct, review and summarize safety related research and testing in efforts to improve safety for drivers, crews and spectators. Investigates on-track incidents to identify opportunities for improvement. Works with industry partners to improve safety through the review, creation and implementation of rules, specifications and protocols.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Participates in/performs a variety of mechanical and test operations with electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or mechanical assemblies and sub-assemblies on safety equipment such as seats, seat belts, helmets, roll cage assemblies and other equipment.
Conceptualizes experiments from conversations/directions and determines and designs test methods and sequences of operation where complete information is not always available.
Designs, develops and troubleshoots new and existing unique quasi-static and dynamic test fixtures. Communicates design requirements verbally and through engineering specifications to shop personnel.
Analyzes test results, writes comprehensive technical summaries and forms engineering recommendations.
Collaborates with industry members to develop and implement safety system improvements for on track deployment through prototype evaluations and rulebook specification.
Participates in incident investigations and crash reconstruction efforts alongside Safety Engineering team using data, video, and photographs to identify opportunities for safety improvement.
Occasional race weekend support of safety engineer research projects including data acquisition and prototype component evaluation.
Approximately 30% travel required including some weekends
Required skills / experience:
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Mechanical or Biomechanical Engineering; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proficient with Matlab. Proficient with or ability learn PTC Creo or CATIA.
FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) certification preferred.
Must have effective reading, writing, and communication skills and be able to work well independently or as part of a team.
Experience with trouble shooting, setting up and using data acquisition systems, high speed video cameras, load cells, displacement transducers, accelerometers and other transducers a plus.
Must be mechanically inclined (this is a hands-on position). Experience with machining, basic hand/power tools, welding and diagnostic equipment a plus.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Must be a team player who likes working as part of a team, a good listener who is open-minded and flexible, and an innovative thinker with strong critical decision making skills and strong technical skills.
