Provides and/or guides care to a specialized group of patients. Serves as a clinical resource or consultant in area of specialty or expertise, assists in planning and providing educational opportunities in clinical area. Coordinates Co-worker Orientation and development. Participates in quality improvement activities. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Safety/Risk Management
- Demonstrates safe medication administration.
- Follows all policies/procedures for Incident Report/Sentinel Events.
- Follows all confidentiality policies/procedures.
- Complies with infection control guidelines and assists in measuring staff compliance and hand hygiene.
- Creates a safe environment through various safety practices including, but not limited to:
- Fall precaution
- Restraint management
- Utilization of Patient I.D. identifiers
- Read back of telephone and verbal orders; sign off of daily orders
- Time out procedures
- Communication hand offs.
- Unit/Department specific policies
- Respects patients'/guests' personal property.
- Adheres to hospital wide and department-specific safety regulations including, but not limited to:
- Fire and tornado
- Environmental safety
- Complies with patients' rights/regulations and serves as a coach/mentor for others. Talks to families and
listens to their concerns.
- Coordinates equipment safety checks and inservices staff on all new devices related to area of concern.

Coordination of Services
- Functions as a Clinical Instructor for the area for Respiratory Therapists, students, nurses and physicians.
- Coordinates workflow by communicating to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Participates in Physician rounds.
- Identifies and resolves problems related to patient, families, physicians, staff, and equipment.
- Demonstrates ability to direct and/or assist with the work activities of department consistent with patient
needs and staff capabilities.
- Serves as a resource for preventing and/or resolving patient related clinical issues/conflicts.
- Evaluates practice and effectively implements change as result of Quality Improvement (QI) studies or
research.
- Assists in research projects.
- Provide teaching and one-on-one in-servicing to the Respiratory staff on all new policy and procedure and equipment
- Meets on a regular basis for the area to assist on change and to promote daily goals and assessment.
- Serves as a facilitator for collaboration with other health care team members.
- Assists in development, review and/or revision of unit orientation process.
- Assists in coordinating individual orientation in collaboration with preceptor, supervisor, staffing
coordinators and orientee.
- Provides both informal and formal feedback on orientees progress to both orientee and to supervisor.
Provides a quiz for area with feedback for orientee.
- Assists/coordinates development and/or revision of unit specific policies and procedures.
- Facilitates development, review and implementation of policies and procedures that relate to area of
practice.
- Participates in and/or coordinates formal unit QI program. Provides data of quality for staff to reach
goals for area of practice.
- Assists in evaluation of QI outcomes and implements appropriate interventions to correct variances.
- Makes independent decisions in routine and complex situations and informs appropriate team members of actions and results.
- Demonstrates ability to collaborate with inter and intra- disciplinary colleagues and community

Primary Aspects
- Demonstrates proper time management skills and priority setting.
- Assists and guides staff in providing care and documenting within accepted standards of practice.
- Independently identifies, assesses, and evaluates complex physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of
patient/families, and provides direction to others in developing their assessment skills
d Accepts responsibility for keeping self informed of current Respiratory practice. Reviews research and
provides this information to staff to change practice.
- Provides and/or coordinates staff education programs in area of clinical expertise. Provide opportunity for
staff to reach their CEU requirements by teaching and providing other clinical experts to attain these
annual requirements.
- Provides one on one teaching at the bed
