Position: Patient Care Associate (PCA)
Department: Medical/Surgical – Adults & Pediatrics
Shift: Full-Time Nights (36 hours/week)

Department Overview:
Join our dynamic, fast-paced 30-bed Medical/Surgical unit caring for adult and pediatric patients. Our primary focus is on adult patients 18 years and older, with occasional pediatric cases each month. Our diverse patient population includes post-operative patients recovering from procedures such as knee, hip, and shoulder replacements, colon resections, bariatric surgeries, and treatment for conditions like sepsis, pancreatitis, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and stable pneumothorax.
We pride ourselves on a strong nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6, supported by dedicated Patient Care Associates. Our team is known for its expertise, teamwork, empathy, and commitment to compassionate care.
Position Overview:
Under the direction of the RN or LPN, assists in the individualized care of the patient to achieve the patient's highest level of wellness.
As a Patient Care Associate (PCA):
Obtain and document vital signs in the electronic medical record system
Assist patients with daily living activities such as meals, bathing, toileting, ambulation, mobility, and transport
Provide clerical support as needed

Additional PCT Responsibilities Include:
Phlebotomy and blood culture collection
Enteral feeding
Wound care
IV and Foley catheter removal
Tracheostomy care and suctioning
Training:
Our Patient Care Associate training program is an accredited Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program, providing a comprehensive, hands-on experience.

- If no previous experience, Mercy will provide a required 175-hour training program that meets the Department of Health and Senior Services requirements. The program will be completed as part of the new hire orientation process and must be completed within 90 days of hire to remain in the PCA position per state guidelines.
- BLS Required within one month of hire, completion of PCA competencies within 3 months of hire
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma, G.E.D, CNA/CPTC. or enrolled in a healthcare career program through their high school curriculum, and/or a current co-worker of Mercy.
- Experience: No prior experience required.
- Minimum Physical Requirements:
- Position requires individuals to push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
- Position requires prolonged standing and walking each shift
- Position requires the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties
- Preferred Certifications: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
