Overview:

 

Performs direct patient care in the Emergency Room under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) according to established standards. Maintains professional accountability for provision of patient care. Coordinates patient care in conjunction with other departments. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our Mission, Values and Mercy Services Standards.

 

Job Description: 

 

Safety/Risk Management:

a. Infection control.

b. Crisis management.

c. Patient's rights protection.

d. Fall prevention/restraint management.

e. Maintain work environment in an organized and safe manner, respecting confidentiality.

f. Notifies maintenance of any facility repairs such as loose carpet, electrical wires, burnt light bulbs, etc.

g. Responsible for maintaining a clean and neat environment, assuring cleanliness and orderliness of department, disposing of used articles, papers, etc., in appropriate receptacles.

Coordination of Services:

a. Involves patient and/or family/significant others in decisions regarding to care. Assists the RN throughout patient admissions and discharge from the department. Performs patient assessments as indicated by the patient's condition or as directed by the RN. Perform patient handoffs utilizing patient safety tools (ex. SBAR, Bedside report, Patient safety rounding). Facilitates communication of pertinent findings including significant changes in patient condition to RN or Provider in a timely manner. Communicates subjective and objective data about patient/family/significant others with appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team. Collaborates with RN, evaluates patient response to care and in determining progress toward achieving outcomes, and documents interventions towards the patient/family/significant other promoting optimal health, healing, or dignified end of life when appropriate.

b. Maintains relevant knowledge of Scope of Practice and Delegation limitations and follows policies/procedures. Completes hospital and departmental required competencies, mandatory in services, workday assignments, and relevant certifications. Participates in Process Improvement activities such as data collection, in-services, and implementation.

c. Reinforces and appropriately documents the educational needs and learning abilities of the patient/family/significant others during the admission and subsequent assessments in the EMR. Initiate and complete protocols.

d. Collaborates with the RN to prioritize care delivery according to the patient needs. Delegates, guides, and directs UAPs in tasks and is responsible for the care provided according to their documented competencies. Performs other duties as assigned or requested by RN or provider.


Primary Aspects:

a. Medications. Administer medications via IV push including narcotics. Serve as second verifier to high-risk Medications. Administer medications infusing over a pump. Changes bags of medications, including but not limited to vasoactive medications, antihypertensives and sedation. Initiate order sets or protocols. Regulate and titrate IV fluids.

b. Respiratory/airway management. Manage respiratory devices, provide care for intubated patients.

c. Assessments. Once baseline assessment has been established by RN, may perform reassessments. Reassessment by collecting and documenting data and reporting any changes from baseline data established by RN. Reassessment also includes RASS, CIWA or other patient scales. Print and interpret EKG strips and 12 Lead.  

 

d. Tasks. Apply splints, OCLs and orthotic devices. POC testing (ex. Pregnancy, creatinine, urine, glucose). Remove staples, sutures and drains.

Complex Aspects:

a. Hypothermic management. Access and maintain central venous lines- including maintenance flush, dressing changes and administration of medications. Monitor the infusion of blood/blood products and stop infusions if adverse reaction is observed and report to RN. Second verifier for blood/blood product transfusions. Run rapid infuser. Utilizes US guided IVs and external jugular IV sites.

b. Patient care/management. Able to provide care and assessments of all patients across the life span. Transport critical care patients to procedures/admission unit.. Physically apply, remove, and document restraints under direction of provider or RN.

Communication Management:

a. Discharge planning. Complete discharge documentation and remove IVs. Reinforce and review health teaching material after RN has completed any new teaching/education. Complete AMA paperwork after going over the benefits and risk with a patient as directed by the RN.

b. Telephone management. Demonstrates knowledge of utilizing answering, holding and transferring multi-line phone system. Remains professional, friendly and helpful when speaking to others.
 

c. Use HEARTS technique in dealing with complaints/issues: Hear them out; Empathize; Apologize; Respond; Take time to follow up; Stay calm

d. Family integrity promotion. Provides accurate updates to patients/family/significant others. Includes all in patient care plan and ensure patients/family/significant others are kept update with delays in care, expectations on what to expect next and informed on procedures/protocols

 

Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Licensure: EMT-P training graduate and licensed in the state of practice.

Experience: Experienced or new paramedic

Preferred Experience: Minimum one year paramedic experience

Physical Requirements/Demands: Stand/walk most of the time on duty, significant amount of bending, lifting and moving patients.
Certifications: Prefer to have completed prior to hire but may obtain during orientation period.

Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association

One of more of the certifications below may be required based on the position/department hired

ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
