Overview:
The Health Information Technician processes and fulfills requests for protected health information (PHI) in compliance with regulations, aiming to enhance requester experience. The role addresses the provider questions regarding documentation and basic chart corrections. The role also involves managing scanned medical records to ensure quality and productivity standards are met.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
• Compliance and Information Requests
o Respond to written or verbal requests, providing the requested information in the appropriate medium while ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations.
• Medical Records Analysis
o Analyze medical records to identify and resolve documentation deficiencies.
o Perform intermediate abstracting and scanning tasks related to Accountable Care Organization (ACO) quality measures.
• Provider Support
o Assist providers by answering questions related to outstanding documentation, including making basic chart corrections as needed (but NEVER to clinical content).
• Quality and Patient Care Initiatives
o Support initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes, quality care, and provider engagement.
• Medical Records Processing
o Verify document and patient information.
• Quality Assurance (QA)
o Complete QA functions.
o Process exceptions.
o Clarify unknown documents.
• Support and Communication
o Field questions and provide support for HIM Associates and Advanced HIM Associates.
o Act as backup as needed.
• Performance Monitoring
o Monitor performance metrics to ensure quality, productivity, and expectations are met.
o Submit IT support tickets and monitor for resolution.
Qualifications:
- Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent; medical terminology.
- Experience: 1 year in HIM/medical records department or related field.2 years in an acute care medical records department; 1 year experience in Release of Information or Analysis role in an acute care setting.
- Preferred Education: Knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Some college preferred.
- Certifications: RHIT or RHIA
- Other: • Strong attention to detail, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently.• Highly motivated and organized problem solver with analytical, problem-solving, and data analysis skills.• Proficient in medical record regulatory requirements, research, computer skills, Microsoft Office, medical terminology, and EHR terminology.• Adaptable to changing needs and dynamics, with the ability to perform repetitive tasks and work on a computer for extended periods.• Possesses strong computer skills, as well as intermediate skills in analysis, problem-solving, and research, with strong attention to detail.
