Overview:

 

This is an entry-level position requiring basic knowledge of carpentry and painting. It is recommended that incumbents attend one or two years of trade school to prepare them for advancement opportunities. The Carpenter/Painter position will allow the incumbent to learn skills necessary to perform coating applications, door and hardware maintenance, basic carpentry repairs, work practices, safety procedures, and become familiar with the respective regulatory requirements. The position will also provide an opportunity to learn proper use of basic tools and equipment necessary to perform carpenter/painter job tasks. The Carpenter/Painter position will support mid-sized and large hospital campuses and will provide the necessary skill to maintain and repair various architectural finishes throughout the hospital and other medical buildings. Utilizes exceptional customer service and communication skills. The purpose of this position is to ensure a safe working environment and support an exceptional Environment of Care for Mercy.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

- Develops skill set to maintain, repair, and replace wall finishes such as drywall, paint, wall coverings, and cove base.- Develops skill set for taping and finishing drywall to accept painted and/or wall covering finishes.- Develops skill set to patch and or install vinyl wall coverings.- Develops skill set for fire stopping rated walls according to UL designs.- Maintains and installs interior architectural signage.- Develops skill set to troubleshoot, maintain, install, and repair all architectural doors and hardware according to NFPA codes.- Develops skill set to cuts keys, rekey lock sets, and maintain database for key distribution.- Develops skill set to install, repair, maintain, and program electronic programmable locksets.- Develops skill set to maintain, repair, and replace ceiling finishes such as drywall, paint, ceiling tiles, and ceiling grid systems.- Develops skill set to maintain, repair, and replace various floor finishes such as carpet, carpet tiles, and VCT.- Develops skill set to maintain and repair cabinet, countertop, and wooden furniture.- Develops skill set to read blueprint and specifications.- Develops skill set to uses proper power tools and equipment for the carpentry and painting work.- Completes preventative maintenance and other work orders in an efficient manner. Closes work orders with relative cost and material information upon completion of the work.- Maintains on-time completion rate of 100% for all High-Risk PM work orders. Maintains at least 90% on-time completion rate for all other PM work orders.- Uses computer to record and close PM work order information- Accurately records testing and maintenance information on logs and preventative maintenance work orders as required.- Rotates shifts and is on call as needed to accommodate work schedules.- Willing and able to assist with security tasks when necessary.- Assists with snow removal or other grounds maintenance activities as needed.- Performs other work duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Experience:  1 or more years working as a carpenter and or painter.  1 or more years working as a painter and or carpenter in a healthcare, educational, or industrial setting.
  • Preferred Education:  High school diploma or equivalent.  2 or more years of training in a Technical or Vocational School.
  • Certifications:  Training in NFPA 80 regulations for fire door inspection and maintenance. Training in UL standards for fire stopping. 
  • Licensure:  Valid Drivers License for all Mercy locations- Fire door maintenance training program with certificate of completion must be completed before advancing to Carpenter/Painter II. - UL fire stop training with certificate of completion must be completed before advancing to Carpenter/Painter II.
  • Other:  Requires oral and written communication skills to communicate with customers and follow instructions.  Verbal ability required to read and understand technical manuals.  Numerical ability required to make calculations for testing, installation, measurement, estimation and repair of equipment.- Ability to prioritize work assignments, conceptualize and formulate finished product.  Form perception is required when measuring and installing parts and equipment.  Spatial ability required to understand forms and relationships when working from blueprints or specifications. Requires knowledge and use of various computer software such as Outlook, TMS and/or Nuvolo.  Ability to manage time and materials efficiently. Completes work assignments in a high-quality manner and the lowest cost to Mercy.  Requires exceptional customer service skills and ability to achieve department goals.  Incumbent must achieve favorable results on both oral and written competency exam prior to advancing to Carpenter/Painter II.  Requires general manual dexterity, basic math knowledge, and mechanical aptitude.  Exposure to extreme temperatures, electric shock, and loud noise.
