General Summary of Position
The Vice President of Nursing Excellence and Organizational Transformation is a change agent. This individual leads the development and execution of the Department of Nursing (DON) strategic initiatives in collaboration with the SVP/Chief Nursing Officer. The incumbent plans, designs and executes short, medium, and long-term transformational strategies that drives change within the DON and across the organization. This individual collaborates with members of the organization's senior management team to facilitate interdepartmental initiatives that impact the patient and associate experience. The incumbent is responsible for driving clinical nursing practice innovation through the engagement of all stakeholders. This individual maintains and demonstrates current knowledge of change management strategies, providing leadership and expertise to advance the goals of the DON, MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) and MedStar Health. This individual builds relationships and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to achieve organizational goals. The incumbent promotes a culture consistent with the MWHC mission, vision, and values. Reports to the Senior Vice President of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer, MWHC and assumes their administrative responsibilities in his/her absence.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Drives Change & Catalyzes Innovation • Approaches organizational transformation with a systems-thinking mindset that recognizes the interconnectedness of the different departments within the organization and how they function within the larger system • Identifies areas of opportunity within the organization that impact patient and associate engagement and experience • Utilizes contemporary performance improvement methodology to drive transformation across the organization


Best Place to Work • Collaborates on the development of DON associate engagement action plans based on Associate Engagement Survey results • Promotes the standards of Pathway to Excellence® throughout the organization • Participates in workforce planning and strategy development • Guides the development of strategies that enhance the practice environment for associates • Supports development of a contemporary nursing care delivery model • Fosters a professional atmosphere and an environment of coaching and development that supports shared decision making and a high level of associate engagement


Best Patient Experience • Oversees the development and execution of the organization's patient experience strategy • Oversees the development and communication of the organization's associate and provider expectations related to patient experience • Maintains awareness of industry best practices and standards related to patient experience • Facilitates interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration on patient experience initiatives • Fosters a culture that engages every associate in the patient experience • Supports the adoption of the Interdisciplinary Model of Care (IMOC) principles throughout the organization


Highest Quality & Safety • Develops, reviews, and evaluates MSH, MWHC and DON policies and procedures. • Identifies and works to mitigate barriers to performance improvement that impact the quality and safety of patient care. • Responsible for patient safety, quality/performance improvement, nursing professional development, accreditation and regulatory compliance, nursing research, and nursing clinical informatics. • Participates in MSH nursing system-wide work related to nursing innovation. • Provides project guidance and support to teams involved in practice change initiatives. • In collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer, considers the operational, human resource, and financial impact of strategic programs, changes, and policy/practice decisions. • Leads efforts to ensure improvement of nurse sensitive indicators. • Collaborates with university affiliates to promote nursing and patient care services at the Washington Hospital Center as a model for patient care, education, and research • Collaborates with associates to champion patient care and quality initiatives. • Oversees the implementation of the vision, mission, philosophy, nursing theories, research, evidence-based practice, and standards of practice across the DON • Demonstrates understanding and promotes compliance with the State Nursing Practice Act, regulatory agency standards and policies of the organization


Market Leader • Promotes experimentation and continuous learning across the organization • supports the acceleration of organizational transformation by incorporating agile principles in performance improvement efforts • Responsible for maintaining MWHC's Pathway to Excellence® designation • Supports efforts to achieve other national designations for the DON • Collaborates with the SVP/CNO and senior nursing leadership team to establish, implement, evaluate, and communicate strategic objectives for the DON. • Develops and executes strategies to ensure that clinical and administrative outcomes are achieved and sustained. • Serve as an agent of change by promoting the understanding, importance, necessity, impact, and process of organizational transformation. • Leverages new technologies and contemporary thinking to evaluate marketplace best practices for possible introduction to MWHC.


Financial Strength • Identifies opportunities for cost savings across the organization • Produces return on investment reports for organizational transformation activities.


 

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
  • Master's degree in Nursing required or
  • Master's degree in Health Care or Business Administration required
  • Doctoral degree in Nursing Practice preferred

Experience

  • 5-7 years of progressively more responsible job-related experience of which at least 2 in an upper level managerial/administrative nursing position required

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required
  • Specialty nursing certification within 1 Year required
