General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is looking for a Violence Intervention Navigator III to join our team at MedStar Health Research Institute! 

As a Violence Intervention Navigator III, you will play an independent role in identifying, linking, retaining, and tracking survivors of community violence to services. Responds emergently to the arrival all highest-level trauma activations for community violence during assigned hours. Provides emergent support and services for acutely injured victims of violence and secondary victims including emergent assessment of high-risk for retaliatory violence, linking with community partners to prevent retaliatory violence, emotional support, trauma informed de-escalation, and liaison between emergency services stakeholders. Helps identify, link, retain and provide overall coordination of care in medical care, medical case management, support services, health education programs, and research opportunities. Participates in data entry and quality improvement measures. Plays an integral part in staff development and novel program initiatives. Develops and independently manages under guidance of Manager collaborative efforts of treatment navigation for patients across a network of city-wide providers. Engages survivors of violent injury to achieve better health outcomes, reduce the risk of violence, and promote a positive sense of self.

Primary Duties: 

  • Ability to quickly develop and sustain trusting relationships with survivors, their family members, and friends. Understanding of overall impacts of violence and the ability to utilize problem solving and crisis management skills to support patients. Provides advocacy for survivors and exhibits working knowledge of available and reliable resources in the community.  

  • Consistently demonstrates support for compliance in the performance of job duties and responsibilities by a) developing and maintaining knowledge of, and performing job functions in compliance with, rules, regulations, policies, and statutes that affect his/her job. Maintains knowledge of and performing job functions in compliance with MedStar Health and MedStar Health Research Institute policies and procedures. Reports compliance concerns appropriately and timely. Maintains clear, accurate and up-to-date documentation in the EMR.  

  • Participates in case conferencing with the care team to share pertinent information about the patient's current environment and medical status. Participates in case finding activities. Participates in needs assessment and networking activities. Participates in testing and counseling efforts in the Emergency Department and other locations as assigned. 

  • Referral tracking and follow-up services. Works closely with care team to identify unmet needs that might impact patient wellness and assist the team with prioritizing those needs. Independently plan and lead special projects and activities specified by the Manager/ Director. Supports the Violence Intervention Navigator and Lead Violence Intervention Navigators with special projects. 

 

 

Qualifications:  

  • High School Diploma or GED. 

  • 5-7 years' experience completing needs assessments. Familiarity with patient resources in the local surrounding area. 

  • Experience providing life coaching and support in a legally paid capacity, or informally as volunteers. 

  • Mental Health First Aid Certification within 180 Days. 

  • First Aid Certification within 180 Days. 

  • Violence Intervention Professional Certification such as DC Peace Academy or equivalent - Curriculum should include how to conduct mediations, how to practice cognitive behavioral theory to heal trauma, how to resolve conflicts, how to lead a restorative justice circle, how to be a life coach. within 180 Days. 

  • UDC Gun Violence Prevention Certification or equivalent within 180 Days. 

  • 2 years of college completed preferred. 

  • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.  

  • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education. 


This position has a hiring range of $58,656 - $98,384
