General Summary of Position
Performs a variety of technical duties to assist with surgery.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Anticipates sequential needs of the surgeon during the operative procedure.
  • Assists with case preparation, following preference card guidelines.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems.
  • Functions as surgical assistant during operative procedures performing specified activities under the direct supervision of the surgeon. May act as second assistant by providing exposure and holding retractors.
  • Identifies and handles specimens appropriately.
  • Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
  • May function as a technical resource person for OR staff providing information relating to instruments and equipment.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides comfort and support for preoperative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
  • Responds to questions from patient, families, and significant others in a prompt, courteous, positive, and knowledgeable manner and/or refers to appropriate personnel.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required or
    • equivalent required and
    • graduation from a school of surgical technology required or
    • completion of hospital-based training. required

    Experience

    • Less than 1 year 6 months experience as a surgical technologist or graduation from a school of surgical technology program. required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification. required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Competency in case procedure, preparation and completion in all services.
    • Verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic computer skills preferred.
