General Summary of Position

The Sepsis Quality Nurse Specialist is a key member of the sepsis care initiative functioning as a clinical expert. The position is responsible for evaluating sepsis care within the organization, identifying opportunities for improvement and providing real-time and formal education for all disciplines involved regarding sepsis care, core measures and other related clinical quality metrics.

The Sepsis Quality Nurse Specialist will work closely with the sepsis coordinator, and the quality and data analytics team. Acts as a change agent to develop system performance standard that improves sepsis care processes, patient sepsis outcomes and the overall MGUH patient experience.

Position Summary:

Professional care provider who assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the nursing care of patients from admission through discharge. In collaboration with the patient and family, provides theory-based professional nursing care and coordinates care delivery with various members of the interdisciplinary team.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited nursing program preferred. Associates degree from an accredited School of nursing required. BSN enrollment required within 6 months of start date and completion within 3 years.

Experience: 3-4 years nursing experience in an acute care setting.  Experience working with Clinical Data sets, data management and analysis, process improvement initiatives. required

 ICU/IMC/ED experience  preferred

 License/Certifications: DC Registered Nurse License required; and/or Compact State Licensure DC Upon Hire required BLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire required. Health Services\ACLS. Specialty certification in nursing encouraged.  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of basic statistics and PowerPoint  presentations would be beneficial.

 Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitors sepsis alerts generated by the EHR and triages the cases that require immediate intervention.
  • Evaluates the care provided for sepsis patients against the evidenced based sepsis guidelines and intervenes accordingly.
  • Serves as a resource to nursing and medical staff and other disciplines in the provision of the patient's plan of care and discharge planning.
  • Collects and analyzes sepsis care data and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  • Works closely with the Data Analytics team to validate and maintain dashboards.
  • Provides real time and formal education to nurses and providers and other disciplines as appropriate in relation to sepsis care guidelines.
  • Assists in the development of reports and presentations on sepsis care processes and outcomes data with quarterly/annual trends with benchmarking to present to all key stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with the Quality Outcomes Coordinator and Clinical Documentation Specialist teams to improve provider documentation as to Sepsis criteria, POA status and other documentation requirements per the sepsis core measure abstraction algorithm.
  • Participates in regulatory and accreditation reviews as appropriate to the role.
  • Collaborates with the sepsis coordinator to enhance overall success of the sepsis program.
