Description

Schedule: Monthly rotation of 4-10 hours shifts (10:00am - 8:30pm Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon) & (10:00am - 8:30pm Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs)

Serves as a personal contact to provide support and helps to alleviate stress for families of patients during the waiting period, acting as a link in the communication network between family, patients, and staff.


Education
  • Associate's degree required
Experience
  • Prior physician office or acute care experience required and
  • Must know medical terminology required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
  • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
  • Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission, values and commitment to compliance with all federal, state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities.
  • Exhibits professionalism, courtesy and excellent customer service, while interacting with patients, guests and co- workers.

  • Supports, comforts and assists families of patients who are waiting for diagnostic test results or who are admitted and/or delayed in the ED, traveling back and forth between the ED waiting room/holding area and core area.
  • Collaborates with nursing staff, volunteers, support staff, attending physicians in order to facilitate and support timely and private communication and information on the patient's progress to families and/or friends throughout the entire department stay/process.
  • Provides reassurance to the patient his or her family member/significant other will be kept informed of patient's location and adherence to or delays.
  • Relays messages between patient, family member/significant other and the staff.
  • Maintains personal contact with and arranges privacy for family member(s)/ significant other(s) who may need to be by themselves, have special concerns, or who may have received an unfavorable medical report from the physician.
  • Assists with guiding patient families such as hospital resources and facilities and their locations.
  • Collaborates with nurses and if needed, prepares and escorts families to and from various areas in the hospital.
  • Exemplifies the Spirit Values in all activities.
  • Assists staff with comfort measures.
  • Rounds and addresses areas of concern on all patients who were seen in the Emergency Department and their admission was delayed.
  • Initiates phone call to patients who were delayed in the Emergency Department for more than five (5) hours.
