General Summary of Position
Functions in a nursing work leader role, managing personnel associated with nursing services, monitors quality and safety issues. Provides professional nursing care for clinic patients and follows established standards and practices.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Directs and manages the clinical nursing activities of the department, inclusive of but not limited to participation in recruiting, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of the clinical staff including participation in progressive disciplinary actions as appropriate.
  • Prepares and modifies assignment and leave schedules to meet patient care requirements.  Recommends actions related to compensation rates, staff promotion, discipline and termination.  Anticipates and organizes opportunities for staff education and training.
  • Coordinates clinical staff activities and communicates recommendations for change to Chairman and Administrator for consideration and implementation.   Participates in problem solving activities to resolve areas of complication.
  • Identifies QA/QI indicators for service and participates in data collection and analysis related to indicators.  Identifies and reinforces issues related to modification in practice and standards of care.  Incorporates practice updates into manuals.  Maintains policy and procedure manuals per GUH standards.
  • Manages designated equipment and supplies with budget to support clinical needs of division including inventory, utilization and distribution.   Consults with Chairman and Administrator regarding changing trends and practice issues affecting equipment and supplies.  Serves as liaison to Department of Surgery, other departments, divisions and hospital.  Estimates preliminary capital equipment budget requests for division.
  • Communicates and collaborates with personnel in other Hospital and University departments, outside agencies and vendors in regards to clinical operational activities of the division.  Ensures that all services meet and are in compliance with licensure, accreditation, and CLIA and JCAHO standards.
  • Performs professional nursing service in outpatient ambulatory care clinical settings including patient assessment, assists in procedures, patient teaching and ongoing care.
  • Conducts interactions with patients and families, in person and by telephone, including but not limited to all aspects of maintaining and implementing medical regimen.  Coordinates health care team activities.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) required and
    • Master's degree in Health Care, Nursing Administration preferred and
    • CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO AN APPROPRIATE COMBINATION OF EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. required

    Experience

    • 1-2 years Progressively responsible experience is a hospital setting or physician practice, inclusive of 1 year of previous supervisory experience required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Registered Nurse, licensed in the District of Columbia; Upon Hire required and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation Upon Hire required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
    • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care;
    • Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care;
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
