General Summary of Position
Provides advanced technical support, such as ERCP's and EUS's, for physicians and provides advanced care to patients during endoscopic procedures. Assists in the training of the Gastroenterology Technician I's and II's in the advanced technologies.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists physicians during endoscopic procedures (e.g.: taking biopsies, advancing the scope (under direction of the physicians), applying pressure to the abdomen, and performing electro cautery and other methods of controlling bleeding. Assists with the positioning/repositioning of patient for the procedure(s).
  • Provides advanced technical support for ERCP (Esophageal Retrograde Cannulation of Pancreas) and EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound) under the direction of the physician. The advanced technology for ERCP includes cannulation, sphincteratomy, and injection of dye in the common bile duct, the exchanging and manipulating of multiply wires, controlling bleeding, brushings, use of balloons for dilations, and placing of esophageal and pancreatic stents. Provides advanced technology for EUS, which requires sophisticated knowledge of EUS machinery, use of probes, spray catheters, and fine needle aspiration. Provides fluoroscopy for the procedure.
  • Prepares room for endoscopic procedures by setting up for each case pertaining to the case needs. Maintains supplies in the room at levels as determined by the head nurse.
  • Troubleshoots minor equipment problems in the Gastroenterology Lab; refers major equipment problems to Biomedical Engineering.
  • Provides support to patient as needed: discusses the upcoming procedure; explains what is transpiring during the procedure; and provides post operative instructions.
  • Prepares and draws up non-controlled medication for the physician to administer. Administers topical anesthetics used in ERCP procedures under the direction of the physician.
  • Assists in the training of the Gastroenterology Technician I's and II's in the advanced technologies.
  • Provides 24 hour on-call, including weekends, for emergency procedures.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Specialized and/or advanced clerical, technical or other vocational training acquired during 1-2 years of additional job-related training required
    • Associate's degree preferred

    Experience

    • 1 to 3 years experience as a Gastroenterology Technician II, or equivalent training and verification of previous experience in advanced technology required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Requires the use of specialized medical equipment (i.e., EEG, EKG, blood analyzer), or data processing equipment (i.e., tape drives, consoles) and one or more years of Gastroenterology Technician II training.
