General Summary of Position
Under the direction or the AVP of Employee Relations, the Director of Employee Relations is responsible for executing the organization's employee relations strategy, programs, policies, and procedures, ensuring a positive, fair and productive work environment. Ensures compliance with federal and local laws; recommending new and/or updated policies as needed. Leads a team that manages workplace concerns through leader consultations, investigations and discipline. The Director will work closely with HR leadership and other departments to support organizational goals and compliance with labor laws.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Oversees the implementation, maintenance, and update of employee relations strategy, policies, procedures, and best practices while ensuring alignment with current law. Key advisor to HR and Leaders on escalated matters.
  • Policy and Compliance: Oversight on compliance of labor laws and regulations at federal, state and local levels. Regularly review and propose updates as needed.
  • Risk Mitigation: Identify risk and trends. Proactively propose initiatives and recommendations that are compliant with labor laws as well as aligned to organizational values. Ensures policy is followed and enforced by team, including investigations, disciplines and terminations.
  • Consultation and Systems Thinking: Provides guidance to team on escalated matters. Consults with HR and Leaders on recommendations to enhance equitable outcomes in the work environment with a holistic lens. Partner with HR functions and Legal on matters dynamically complex, understanding the interconnectedness across the organization prior to action being implemented. Enhance adaptive learning and mapping to future state as appropriate.
  • Conflict Resolution: Oversee mediation strategy, practice and problem-solving techniques implemented by the team. This includes being experienced in negotiation and restorative practices that lead to a cohesive and productive work environment for all parties involved. Provide training as needed/requested.
  • Systems and Reporting: Reports and briefs on ER data and trend analysis. Provide recommendations to address concerning and predictive trends. Ensure data integrity and consistency of system use. Monitor KPIs of the team and develop improvement goals and actions. Execute initiatives that promote a digital mindset and culture in leveraging and integrating technology in process.
  • Team Management: Manages a team of Specialists that resolve complex, sensitive and escalated employee relations issues, including investigations, disciplinary actions, and grievances. Provides guidance and support to team, HR, and Leaders. Provides mentorship and development to Team.
  • Regularly participates in the development of System-wide plans, goals, and objectives as a member of the HR leadership team and membership on various entity specific and corporate committees. Interfaces, coordinates activities and collaborates on decisions with key individuals within MedStar Health as needed.
  • Assists in the training, orientation, and assignments of HR department staff. Evaluates and/or provides performance feedback on mid to lower-level HR associates. Makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with HR department staff to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments, and exchange information. Coaches, guides and mentors HR staff members. Provides leadership by example.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree Human Resources, Business Administration or related field required
    • Master's degree Human Resources, Business Administration or related field preferred

    Experience

    • 8-10 years Experience in Employee Relations or related HR field required
    • 3-4 years Leadership experience in Employee Relations or related HR field required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Professional in Human Resources (PHR)-HRCI preferred
    • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)-HRCI preferred
    • SHRM-CP preferred
    • SHRM-SCP preferred
    • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

      • Knowledge of labor laws and regulations
      • Communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
      • Proven ability to manage complex employee relations issues
      • Analytical and problem-solving abilities
      • Leadership and team management skills
      • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment

      This position has a hiring range of $131,497 - $256,630
