General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is looking for a Chief Radiation Therapist to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center!

As a Chief Radiation Therapist, you will coordinate the daily technical operations of the radiation oncology center. Supervises radiation therapists working at the center. Works with the physician, office manager and staff to ensure that the office runs efficiently, and patients are treated in a timely manner. Supports the Technical Director in implementing new policies and procedures and in attaining departmental and organizational goals.

Primary Duties: 

  • Records all aspects of simulation, treatment delivery, and billing. Proficient with EMR and IGRT. Keeps treatment/CT simulator rooms adequately stocked. Keeps treatment/simulator rooms and console area neat. Reports all treatment units/simulator malfunctions and documents. Directly supervises the radiation therapists. Interacts with the physician, technical director, physicist, and dosimetrist in the implementation of new policies, procedures, and technology. Ensures that all therapists are familiar with, adhere to, and demonstrate working knowledge of all RadAmerica Technical and EMR policies. Ensures the accuracy of patient billing for therapy and simulation procedures. Support the Technical Director and Chief Physicist/CTIO.  

  • Emphasizes quality improvement. Assists the Technical Director in obtaining data pertinent for annual focus/outcome studies, interviewing applicants, and evaluating staff. Completes preliminary evaluations of staff. Develops internal processes to improve workflow. Actively participates in all QA procedures and ensures all aspects of weekly chart review are completed by the team. Performs dose verification according to protocol and documents. Ensures Chart Rounds are assigned weekly to all patients. Verifies and records SSDs weekly. Takes necessary portal images on all patients. Performs monthly technical peer reviews and monthly recaps. Notifies physicist and clinical engineers of any problems with morning QA or machine issues. Accurate records problems with machines in problem logs. Provides weekly or other assigned reports for department and submits them to the technical director. Supervises the scheduling of all simulation and treatment procedures. Provides patients with initial appointment and treatment calendar. 

  • Operates the CT simulator and supporting equipment. Performs Ultrasound, HDR, and Mold Room duties. Performs and maintains credentialing for catheterizations, urethrograms, oral, and IV Contrast. Consistently performs Time Out procedure and provides patient with information/what to expect. Fabricates immobilization devices. Verifies all necessary forms are signed and witnessed prior to the procedure. Uses the EMR policy and procedure manual. Completes all appropriate forms, photographs, and QCL items, including billing.  

  • Notifies the physician of canceled appointments and documents in EMR. Interacts with the physician, physicist, and technical director in the implementation of new policies, procedures, and technology. Communicates effectively with the technical director relaying concerns of staff therapists. Completes all necessary student/visitor forms and forwards them to technical director. Completes all student clinical evaluations. Oversees orientation and training. Assists the technical director in performing evaluations on new associates. Ensures therapists have the proper skill levels to perform their daily responsibilities.  

  • Operates the linear accelerator(s). Administers radiation therapy treatments according to radiation therapy safety guidelines. Provides on- going patient education by reinforcing the physician's advice regarding skin care, diet, treatment side effects, and reactions. Provides patient education on what to expect during the daily treatment. Performs hand calculations and RadCalc dose verifications. 


Qualifications:  

  • Associate degree in Radiation Therapy Technology or graduation from an accredited school of Radiation Therapy. 

  • 5 years progressive clinical experience. 

  • ARRT Certification. 

  • Basic Life Support. 

  • Maryland Board of Physicians License with the letter prefix ‘O,' or ‘M' as a Radiation Therapist and/or Radiographer. 

  • Bachelor's degree preferred. 

 

 

This position has a hiring range of $48.36 - $91.51
