General Summary of Position

The individual in this position is a staff member who participates in and facilitates the management of the operational and personnel activities of the Morgue/autopsy section of the Anatomic Pathology department. Assists in instruction of medical residents, orders and manages all supplies. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Medstar Washington Hospital Centers philosophy, policies, procedures and standards. 

Working hours for this role is 4am - 12:30pm, Monday - Friday.  


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains complete supervision of the Autopsy suite, and assists in all phases of laboratory work and autopsies, preparing specimens for mcirobiology and other testings and performs clerical duties as required during the autopsy. Assists in training new residents or pathologist assistants in the performance of hospital based autopsies and processing of tissue specimens.
  • Manages and orders supplies,and makes minor repairs on equipment and initiates orders for equipment repair.
  • Maintains a manual log book for signing cases in and out of the morgue. Prepares a daily adult/infant inventory report, to include identified problems to management. Any identified quality issues in the morgue are immediately brought to management, and documented with a patient safety event.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the Autopsy room, work areas and equipment, remaining DOH and CAP inspection ready at all times.
  • Exemplies Guest and Staff relations standards in all activities and holds staff accountable for conformity with those standards in all activities associated with the morgue.
  • Coordinates provisions for the removal of amputations and other tissue specimens from the hospital morgue and assumes responsibilities for the release of deceased persons.
  • As assigned, performs grossing of non complex tissue specimens in the pathology laboratory.
  • Prepares the Frozen section room for daily operations to include cleaning room, instruments, equipment, and chemicals. As assigned, assists pathologists in frozen section area of the laboratory by frozen section microtomy and staining preparations.
  • Gives guided tours of the morgue to clergy and other authorized personnel.
  • Works closely with decedent affairs and HIM by providing details reports on deceased patients.
  • Assists in maintaining chemical inventory of the anatomic pathology laboratory.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required and
    • Two years of College completed in mortuary science, forensic science, anatomy and physiology, histology, or biology. required
    • Bachelor's degree in mortuary science, forensic science, anatomy and physilogy, histology, or biology. preferred

    Experience

    • 1-2 years required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
    • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, or tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
    • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, in instrumentation and legal aspect of consent for performing autopsies.
    • Good interpersonal skills
    • Mature individual able to be empathetic to the needs of bereaved famiies/signficant others.


    This position has a hiring range of $26.865 - $40.553
