Job Summary

 

The Registered Nurse (RN) – Infusion Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center provides compassionate, high-quality nursing care to patients receiving outpatient infusion therapies. This role is responsible for performing comprehensive patient assessments; administering IV medications, biologics, blood products, hydration, and other prescribed infusion treatments; and closely monitoring patient responses to therapy to ensure safety, comfort, and optimal outcomes. The RN identifies and manages infusion-related reactions and side effects, adheres to evidence-based protocols, and maintains compliance with regulatory and safety standards. In collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and the interdisciplinary care team, the RN contributes to individualized care planning, delivers patient and family education regarding treatment regimens and symptom management, and supports patients throughout their treatment experience.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive patient assessments prior to, during, and following infusion therapy to identify clinical needs, monitor treatment response, and detect adverse reactions.
  • Safely administers prescribed infusion therapies, including IV medications, biologics, blood products, hydration, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, in accordance with physician orders, evidence-based protocols, and organizational policies.
  • Monitors patients closely for infusion-related reactions and side effects; initiates appropriate nursing interventions and escalates care as clinically indicated.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding treatment plans, medication side effects, symptom management, and post-infusion care instructions.
  • Collaborates with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and the interdisciplinary care team to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care.
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record, ensuring continuity of care and regulatory adherence.
  • Adheres to infection prevention, medication safety, and infusion therapy standards, including proper handling of hazardous medications when applicable.
  • Ensures a safe, efficient, and patient-centered infusion environment while promoting patient comfort, dignity, and satisfaction.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff education, and professional development activities to support clinical excellence.
  • Serves as a patient advocate, addressing patient concerns and coordinating care needs across the continuum of services.

Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) an accredited nursing program required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • If prepared at the associate degree in nursing level required to enroll in a BSN program within 12 months of hire date and completion within 4 years of hire date.

Experience

  • 1–2 years of oncology nursing experience required, outpatient oncology infusion experience preferred.
  • Experience administering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologics, blood products, and supportive infusion therapies in accordance with ONS guidelines and safety standards.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills to monitor patient response, identify adverse reactions, and manage treatment-related side effects, including hypersensitivity reactions and extravasation.
  • Proven ability to provide patient and family education regarding cancer treatments, symptom management, and supportive care.
  • Demonstrated collaboration with oncologists, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and interdisciplinary oncology teams to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Chemotherapy/Biotherapy administration certification required or to be obtained within an established timeframe after hire
  • Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN®) preferred
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred

This position has a hiring range of

USD $40.17 - USD $65.31 /Hr.
