Title and Summary
Senior Principal Architect OverviewMastercard Services is responsible for acquiring, engaging, and retaining customers by managing fraud and risk, cybersecurity and improving the digital payments experience while providing value added services and using expertise, data-driven insights, and execution.
Within Mastercard Services, our Customer Acquisition & Engagement (CA&E) business drives profitable business growth and maximizes customer lifetime value by transforming routine interactions into lasting relationships. We leverage our unique advantages in data, personalization, incentives, and optimization, in addition to our global expertise and scale, to efficiently acquire high value new customers, drive engagement and desired behaviors, and build customer loyalty. Our products encompass a full range of capabilities, including strategic consulting, campaign and creative design and execution, on-going optimization, and personalization, rewards and offers, and loyalty program design and execution.
We are seeking a strategic Sr. Principal Engineer / Enterprise Architect to drive the transformation of our CA&E Technology organization, across our full set of programs and assets. In this role, you will play a critical role in aligning our work with Mastercard's Technology Strategy, identifying synergies across other businesses in Services and across all programs in CA&E. You will collaborate with Product and Technology executives to identify areas of technology investment, help other principal engineers with architecture and review for various components of delivery of our technical vision and roadmap. You will lead and collaborate with principal engineers across CA&E and Services to architect, design, build and scale innovative, data-driven platforms and solutions. The ideal candidate will bring proven experience envisioning and implementing complex product roadmaps, shaping technical strategy, scaling new technologies across public and private cloud to deliver high-volume, low-latency systems that operate at scale.
The Senior Principal Architect will be responsible for architecting, building, transforming, planning, integrating, migrating, and scaling critical platforms, systems and services that support the Consumer Acquisition & Engagement (CA&E) business in Services. This role requires a visionary technical leader who understands the Martech/Adtech/Loyalty landscape, align technology architecture with strategic business goals, and ensure seamless execution across diverse teams and markets. The Senior Principal Engineer will provide leadership across a group of Principal and Lead engineers, distributed across the various CA&E programs to drive interoperability, standardization, alignment across initiatives, and ensure sound engineering practices.

As a Senior Principal Architect at Mastercard, you are expected to perform the following general duties:
• Work on complex enterprise-wide initiatives spanning multiple services/programs and drive resolution
• Work with business/product owners to architect and deliver on new services to introduce new products and bundles
• Drive the architectural design, including dependent services, service interactions, and policies
• Simplify and improve the cost/benefit of a function/service/architecture strategy
• Lead by example with hands-on approaches to demonstrate engineering excellence
• Take on organization-wide and public speaking engagements and publish white papers and
• blogs on relevant and emerging technical topics
• Mentor and guide software engineers and leads in the team to improve engineering
Within CA&E Technology, you are responsible for:
• Drive the architectural design, including dependent services and service interactions productivity, quality, and technology policy compliance within and across CA&E Programs
• Maintain the end-to-end flow and architecture diagrams for CA&E products and services, and perform periodic architecture reviews with Security Engineering and other teams to comply with security and engineering principles
• Simplifying existing CA&E processes, technologies, systems, and services
All About You - Technical Qualifications
• Has the ability to write secure code in three or more languages (e.g., C, C+, C#, Java, Scala, Golang, JavaScript) and is familiar with secure coding standards (e.g., OWASP, CWE, SEI CERT) and vulnerability management
• Has skills in building applications using open frameworks to achieve reuse and reduce development times (e.g., Spring Boot, React, gRPC, others)
• Able to perform debugging and troubleshooting to analyze core, heap, thread dumps and remove coding errors
• Understands software development productivity metrics (e.g., code churn, commit size, commits/story) and apply generative AI tools and techniques to help teams increase productivity, remove blockers, and continuously improve code velocity, quality, and release frequency
• Has skills to engage engineers across Technology organizations to promote standard software patterns and reuse of common libraries and services
• Possess skills to analyze data flows and perform threat modeling (e.g., STRIDE, SDL, VAST, DREAD) to identify trust boundaries and implement zero trust between services
• Has skills to develop and evangelize on reference architecture and run principles to help teams adopt Engineering Principles from the start (poison pill, active/active/active, auto-scaling, self-healing, others)
• Has skills to succinctly articulate architecture patterns of complex systems, with business and technical implications, to executive and customer stakeholders
• Understands Platform-as-a-Service to build applications that run on standardized application platforms and deploy specifications, e.g., Web and application servers, API Gateways, Database Services, and Load balancers
• Familiar with the adoption of standard logging frameworks and tools (e.g., log4j, SLF4J, Splunk) to aggregate and analyze time-series of logs
• Has skills to build monitoring and alerting focusing on key signals (resource usage, threshold breaches, rate of change) by using industry-standard tools (e.g., Dynatrace)
• Has experience in leading and coaching teams to perform software planning and estimation for large scale complex programs
• Has skills to drive trade-off discussions to set the right development capacity based on value drivers (e.g., regulatory, security, new business, market parity, technical debt)
