Job Summary

For Rehab Services: Assists the staff by preparing patients, equipment, and assisting treatments for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Aids in support of patient during therapy, the personal care of patients, and the cleaning and storing of equipment. Assists in guiding patients during ambulation, treatments, and rehabilitation exercises.
For Cardiac Rehab Services: Assist the Nurses with ambulation of cardiac inpatients.  Secondary functions include assisting Cardiac, Pulmonary, and Vascular staff with outpatient rehab exercise classes, programming, and operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum Years of Experience: None.
Substitutable Education & Experience: None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: CPR certification or ability to be certified within 3 months of hire
Required Training: Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions;
Basic knowledge of computers;
Good telephone communication skills;
Knowledge of filing and arithmetic.

Essential Functions
  • Demonstrates age specific competence to provide developmentally appropriate care for the following patient population: Infant (Birth to 1 year); Child (1 year through 12 years); Adolescent (13 years through 17 years); Adult (18 years to 65 years); Geriatric (over 65 years).
  • Communicate with patient and family in appropriate manner.
  • Appropriately respond to any signs or symptoms the patient may experience and report these to the appropriate staff in a timely manner.
  • Chart and charge exercise sessions, appropriately, in EPIC.
  • Assists with checking in patients, including placing ECG electrodes, taking blood pressures, heart rates, oxygen saturations, and giving patients their daily exercise prescription cards. This may also include providing non-complex support, such as helping with ambulating patients, preparing a hot pack, adjusting crutches/walker, filling, preparing TENS electrodes, cleaning the whirlpool, setting up pulse leverage, and transportation of delicate equipment such as a FEES Scope.
  • Prepares patient for treatment by assisting patient from wheelchair or stretcher to treatment table; properly positioning and draping patient; and assisting patient to put on and remove wearable supportive devices.
  • Patient transportation duties are performed, such as assists inpatients to dress and transfer to wheelchair or stretcher, transports patients to and from department and coordinates with nurse, therapist and M.D. for the best time to take patient to therapy.
  • Assists patients in getting on and off exercise equipment, and making sure the exercise equipment is on the proper settings.
  • Reports to the necessary staff any inappropriate signs or symptoms the patients may experience.
  • Assists as needed during exercise sessions. Enters basic information, such as exercise blood pressures, oxygen saturations, RPEs (rating of perceived exertion), and comments, into the Scott Care system during exercise sessions.
  • Assists with checking out patients, including removing electrodes, taking blood pressures, heart rates, oxygen saturations, RPEs (ratings of perceived exertion), and asking patients if they experienced any chest or leg pains during exercise.
  • Cleans exercise and therapy equipment as necessary.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Takes numerous calls from physician offices, hospital nursing staff, and therapists. Takes numerous calls from outpatients and schedules appointments.
  • Answers phone and replies to routine questions, records, and/or relays messages or locates required person.
  • Assists Administrative Assistant with putting together charts for new patients and other administrative work, as necessary.
  • Stocks supplies, paperwork, and reports on what needs to be re-supplied as necessary.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or as required in an emergency.
  • Meets deadlines and commitments with little supervision necessary.
  • Uses safe techniques for protection of patients and self in performing duties. Demonstrates competence in safe delivery of care duties.
  • Maintains an optimistic and professional image and exhibits excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers. Demonstrates teamwork while performing duties, for example, assists with the transportation of patients as needed. Shows courtesy, compassion and respect. Conforms to LMC's Service Excellence Policy.
  • Reports to work on time and meets the hospital criteria for attendance and tardiness.
  • Within Cardiac Rehab: Primary function is to assist the Nurses and Exercise Physiologists with ambulation of cardiac inpatients. Secondary functions will include assisting Cardiac, Pulmonary, and Vascular Rehab staff with outpatient exercise classes, programming, and operations. Under direction from cardiac rehab staff, ambulates patients, including assisting patients out of and into their bed or chair, positioning the patient on their walkers, handling their oxygen tanks and IV poles, if necessary.
  • Within Rehab Services: Primary function is to assist therapists and therapy assistants in carrying out the programs of treatment for patients referred to Rehabilitation Services. Secondary functions include assisting in carrying out internal workings, multiple clerical duties, equipment preparation and cleaning as required within Rehabilitation Services Department.
