Description

Position Overview: The Switchgear Designer is responsible for the conceptualization, detailed engineering, and drafting of low and medium voltage (LV/MV) switchgear solutions for industrial, commercial, and utility applications. The role encompasses designing electrical layouts, selecting appropriate components, preparing technical documentation, and collaborating cross-functionally to ensure products meet customer specifications and industry standards. Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Drafting: Develop 2D and 3D CAD drawings, layouts, and schematics for MV/LV switchgear, including circuit breakers, busbars, protective relays, and enclosures.
  • Product Development: Participate in new product development and continuous improvement initiatives for switchgear assemblies.
  • Technical Specifications: Prepare detailed bill of materials (BOM), wiring diagrams, and device lists. Select electrical components based on project requirements, standards (IEEE, UL, ANSI), and customer specifications.
  • Compliance & Standards: Ensure all designs are compliant with relevant regulations and standards (e.g., IEEE C37.20.2, UL 1558, NEC).
  • Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, electrical engineers, production, and quality assurance teams throughout the design and manufacturing process.
  • Problem-Solving: Address engineering challenges related to space, heat dissipation, arc resistance, and manufacturability.
  • Documentation: Generate project-specific technical documents, design specifications, and as-built records.
  • Customer Interaction: Support sales and application engineering teams in reviewing and refining designs per customer feedback and site conditions.
  • Testing Support: Assist with design validation, testing, and certification activities.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in switchgear, power distribution, or control panel design; internship or co-op experience acceptable for junior roles.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, EPLAN, or similar).
  • Familiarity with MV/LV switchgear components, protective relays, and busbar systems.
  • Understanding of relevant standards (IEEE, UL, ANSI, NEC).
  • Strong technical, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with medium voltage (5-35 kV) is a strong plus.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with gas-insulated switchgear (GIS).
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and process optimization.
  • Familiarity with SCADA, PLCs, or smart grid technology.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., EIT, PE, IEEE membership) are desirable.
  • Hands-on experience in factory or field testing of switchgear assemblies.
