Description

Kelly Engineering is currently recruiting for a (Direct Hire) (Senior Controls Engineer) in Auburn Hills. We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Controls Engineer with proven experience at a system integrator to design, program, test, and commission industrial control systems for automation projects. This role requires strong Allen-Bradley (AB) PLC/HMI expertise, with Siemens experience considered a plus. The ideal candidate will have experience with automotive controls standards, especially GCCS and Ford GVAS, and be comfortable working in dynamic, project-based environments with variable travel schedules.

Pay Range - $40/hr. - $50/hr.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement PLC and HMI programs (Allen-Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix, Siemens S7/TIA Portal)
  • Configure and integrate industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, DeviceNet, ControlNet)
  • Perform on-site commissioning, debug, and troubleshooting of automation systems
  • Develop I/O lists, sequence of operations, and system architecture documentation
  • Configure, program, and troubleshoot motion control, robotics integration, and vision systems as required
  • Work with electrical design teams to ensure proper panel layouts and wiring diagrams
  • Utilize plant and OEM specifications (GCCS, Ford GVAS, and other customer-specific standards)
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers on control system best practices
  • Provide ongoing technical support during startup and after project completion

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience as a Controls Engineer, preferably with an integrator background
  • Strong proficiency in Allen-Bradley PLC and HMI programming (ControlLogix, FactoryTalk View SE/ME)
  • Siemens PLC experience a plus
  • Familiarity with GCCS and Ford GVAS standards strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of common industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS, Modbus)
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Experience with VFDs, servo systems, and safety PLCs
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to travel up to 35% (varies by project) — may be home for months or gone for extended periods; flexibility to return home every 2 weeks during long projects
  • Ability to work during plant shutdowns, including July, Christmas, and occasional April projects; must be available for some holiday work
