Description

Laboratory Technician

  • Location: Modesto, CA
  • Pay: &21/hour
  • Shift: Monday-Friday 12pm-8pm
  • Temporary

Under general supervision, the Laboratory Technician performs physical and chemical analysis of grapes, grape products, alcoholic beverages, water, and related materials to facilitate the production of winery products. The technician observes department safety practices, procedures, and quality systems, performing timely and accurate analysis of wine, juice, and other samples using a variety of methods, including but not limited to titration, distillation, enzymatic chemistry, and other specialized methods.

Responsibilities also include performing microbial testing according to established SOPs, preparing chemical reagents, and continuously monitoring and contributing to general housekeeping of the laboratory. The technician accurately transcribes lab results to appropriate forms or databases, operates, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instruments, and receives, prioritizes tests, and reports results in a timely manner. The role promotes teamwork among lab staff and all winery personnel, works on special projects, and takes on other responsibilities as assigned. Satisfactory attendance, including timeliness, is expected.

The Laboratory Technician is also responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental, and safety regulatory considerations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; OR Associate's degree plus 1 year of laboratory technician experience; OR High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate plus 3 years of Laboratory Technician experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibilities.
  • Skilled in writing simple correspondence.
  • Skilled in basic mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Required to maintain availability across 3 shifts (day, swing, and graveyard), work overtime when necessary, and work weekends when required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Required to lift and move 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb and work at extreme heights.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, food science, or biology plus 1 year of Laboratory Technician experience.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in MS Excel and MS Word at a basic level.
  • Experience reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Skilled in mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.
  • Experience solving practical problems and handling a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
  • Skilled in interpreting instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Requirements

  • The employee frequently sits, uses hands to handle or feel, and communicates verbally.
  • The employee occasionally stands, walks, and reaches with hands and arms.
  • The employee must frequently lift and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Required to climb and work at extreme heights.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
