The Nurse Manager holds 24-hour accountability for the quality of patient care, efficiency of operations, and human resources management for area(s) assigned. S/he will strive to achieve the optimal patient experience in a cost-effective manner, while applying evidenced-based leadership and practice. The Nurse Manager is responsible for the provision of safe patient care, in a manner that is consistent with the professional standards and hospital policies. The Nurse Manger promotes a positive and professional environment; supervises charge nurses and front line staff; maintains a stable and productive staff; involves staff at all levels in Shared Governance and Magnet Forces; and makes data driven decisions. S/he will role model performance and behaviors that are consistent with the values of the organization, furthering its mission, vision and strategic plan.
Manages all clinical operations under the direction of the Regional Operations Director. Is accountable for the quality of patient care, efficiency of operations, and human resources management. Patient care and services are carried out in collaboration with hospital administration and the medical staff and in compliance with organizational goals and appropriate regulatory agency requirements. Manages daily operations of the clinic; promotes a positive and professional environment; supervises clinical staff; maintains a stable and productive staff; involves staff at all levels in Shared Governance and Magnet Forces; makes data driven decisions. Able to provide telephone triage. In addition, as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to patients and their families in the outpatient setting, when required. Supervises the utilization of resources and the application of new technological developments in patient care. Performs complex and varied administrative and clinical assignments. Serves as a personal contact for physicians, staff, and outside departments in order to address problems, issues or concerns that require attention. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties:
- Daily rounding with purpose on clinical staff, providers and patients.
- Under the direction of a physician and operating within the scope of practice, triages patient phone calls and provides guidance and direction to inquiries per protocols.
- Promotes effective communication and working relationships within the nursing areas, and between nursing staff, physicians, and other departments. Provides leadership and guidance to the Pasadena Ambulatory Clinical Care Council meetings and tracks progress and outcome of activities
- Responsible for selecting and retaining qualified clinical staff to carry out the unit's care system in accordance with hospital philosophy and the organizational objectives. Works with the Education Department and Human Resources to ensure that the necessary orientation, training, and continuing education is available to the staff. Leads recruitment and retention activities
- Serves as a personal contact for physicians, staff, and outside departments in order to address problems, issues or concerns that require attention.
- Investigates and resolves incidents and complaints or suggestions from physicians, patients, visitors, and staff. Corrects deficiencies, if any, and prepares documentation or explanation as needed. Records and investigates all incidents/accidents that occur.
- Directs and coordinates patient care initiative. Reviews patient care initiative to determine effectiveness in meeting established goals for care, treatment, and/or procedures, adherence to departmental and hospital policies, and conformance with established patient care standards. Initiates appropriate action to correct or enhance patient care programs. Directs compliance with regulatory and accreditation agency standards and federal and state regulations regarding patient care. Prepares for inspections by agencies.
- Plans for provision of services through provision of appropriate levels of qualified, competent staff. Policies and procedures are in place to support scope of services.
- Assesses staff education needs and oversees development of education programs. Promotes staff participation in educational opportunities and activities.
- Serves as coach and mentor to all clinical staff.
- Monitors progress of new hires and ensures they advance to competent, independent practice in a timely manner.
- Ensure 100% attendance by staff at mandatory education and training programs; .edu modules.
- Approves day to day deviation from established staffing guidelines based on patient need and productivity standard. Flexes staff according to patient acuity, census, and budget guidelines.
- Approves monthly schedules and advance requests for time off fairly and consistently. Consistently applies applicable HR policy & procedure for granting time off and/or changes in schedule.
- Communicates information, assignments, priorities, and special requests to staff.
- Manages workload of staff. Monitors status of pending items and follow-ups, as needed.
- Completes all payroll relates tasks thoroughly and on time.
- Participates in monitoring and evaluating the quality and appropriateness of patient care. Contributes objective data regarding performance of other clinical staff members, as requested.
- Ensures completion of occurrence reports and investigates in a timely manner. Notifies Risk management immediately for significant or potentially significant events “Never 27s”.
- Oversees department charge bundling and billing submission. Implements and enforces billing protocols to ensure compliance. Educates clinical staff and administrative staff on billing procedures to ensure compliance.
- In conjunction with ROD and other clinic leadership, develops and implements security related procedures such as office opening and closing routines, recognition of duress signals and key controls. Coordinates security activities with University Public Safety Department. Promotes and maintains standards for security conscious awareness and behavior. Maintains knowledge of University's crime prevention and suppression programs and services. Ensures dissemination of security related information to staff.
- Maintains a safe environment in accordance with standards, policies and safety regulations. Ensures compliance with infection control policies.
- Administers use of facilities, equipment and space, as well as maintenance and repair of existing facilities and equipment.
- Ensures that exam rooms and treatment areas are supplied and maintained adequately by support personnel.
- Initiates or participates in process improvement and “best practice” initiative within the specialties and collaborates with other ambulatory clinics to align across the enterprise.
- Participates in establishing systems within the departments which support and practice shared governance management philosophy.
- Contributes to the development of customer service standards and expectations.
- Assists in establishing methods for monitoring employee, patient and physician satisfaction with the services provided within the department.
- Collects and delegates collection of selected data elements. Required elements are collected and provided to nursing leadership each month, on time.
- Actively furthers systems and standards that support Shared Governance, Magnet, and Just Culture philosophy.
- Displays understanding of governing regulations, Title 22, and TJC requirements, defining and maintaining the standards of nursing practice while ensuring consistency with the hospital standards. Contributes to the development and implementation of a unit-based performance improvement program which complies with TJC, Title 22, and other applicable regulatory agencies
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Req Bachelor's Degree Nursing Degree in Nursing
- Req 5 years RN experience in an ambulatory or acute care environment
- Req 1 - 2 years Progressive ambulatory management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Pref Master's degree Nursing Degree in Nursing or in progress, strongly preferred *Master's Degree in Nursing may be in lieu-of Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Req Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing) Valid California License.
- Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
- Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
The annual base salary range for this position is $145,600.00 - $240,240.00.
