The Chief of Quality and Patient Safety is a key executive role responsible for championing clinical quality, patient safety, and high reliability across Keck Medical Center of USC. Reporting to the CEO, this leader will drive quality improvement initiatives, oversee regulatory and accreditation compliance, and support medical staff performance reviews. The Chief will work closely with the Chief Medical Officer for KMC and other key hospital leadership and clinical teams to enhance patient care, safety, and satisfaction, including the oversight of transfusion-free services.
Essential Duties:
- Strategic Leadership: • Develop and implement organization-wide strategies for quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical performance, including transfusion-free practices. Collaborate with hospital and medical staff to reduce clinical errors and enhance accountability.
- Regulatory & Accreditation Compliance: • Ensure adherence to standards set by TJC, CDPH, CMS, and other regulatory bodies. • Oversee compliance with accreditation requirements and quality-related reporting, specifically concerning transfusion-free services.
- Quality Management: • Identify trends, optimize data collection, and lead initiatives to improve patient care management, clinical outcomes, and operational efficiency. • Coordinate medical staff peer reviews and assess the effectiveness of transfusion-free protocols.
- Performance Improvement: • Enhance patient experience, reduce errors, and develop strategies to improve clinical quality and safety. • Conduct root cause analyses, including those related to transfusion practices, and implement corrective actions.
- Data Management: • Develop a data strategy to track and report quality outcomes, including metrics related to transfusion-free services, analyze metrics, and drive improvements. • Manage the electronic incident reporting system.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: • Foster collaborative relationships with internal teams and external agencies. • Ensure alignment with value-based program goals and regulatory requirements, particularly for transfusion-free initiatives.
- Human Resource Management: • Lead and mentor team members, promoting a high-performance culture and ensuring effective resource utilization across quality and transfusion-free services.
- Organizational Leadership: • Promote Keck's mission and values, collaborate to eliminate barriers impacting service quality, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Essential Duties: • Integrate into Keck's leadership team, build credibility, and improve public quality rankings. • Assess and enhance areas of oversight, including transfusion-free services. • Design and implement efficient processes for quality management. • Oversee quality, regulatory, data, infection prevention functions, and transfusion-free services. • Collaborate on strategy development and support performance improvement initiatives. • Educate staff on regulatory, quality improvement, and transfusion-free practices.

Required Qualifications:
- Req Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare related field
- Req Master's degree in a healthcare related field
- Req 5-10 years Experience in hospital management with recent performance improvement experience including survey experience.
- Req 5 years Progressive leadership experience in an acute care environment managing, leading, and developing staff.
- Req Experience in leading Quality Improvement Programs as well as expertise in working with risk management and accrediting organizations.
- Req Thorough knowledge of the health care industry, its critical issues and major challenges.
- Req Knowledge of healthcare quality principles and regulatory compliance principles.
- Req In-depth knowledge of the principles and practices of quality improvement, patient safety, and principles of a High Reliability Healthcare organization.
- Req In-depth knowledge of audit, control and monitoring processes, and the ability to effectively implement and maintain them.
- Req Knowledge of the principles and practices of managed care related to utilization management and/or case management and/or discharge planning.
- Req Knowledge of physician service revenue cycle and medical necessity principles.
- Req Knowledge of accreditation organizations such as Joint Commission, CMS, and CDPH.
- Req Strong knowledge of and ability to identify, implement, monitor and analyze relevant metrics models, and implement effective interventions based on results.
- Req Demonstrated knowledge of developing/planning information systems to support quality/disease management infrastructure.
- Req Baseline understanding of health information technology, health information exchange, including data networks, database management and operating systems and interfaces.
- Req Demonstrated experience in program development, training/education, project management.
- Req Knowledge of requirements for external quality and safety organizations, regulatory agencies and accreditation standards.
- Req Demonstrated high level of strategic and analytical ability necessary to formulate short-long range plans and evaluate data.
- Req Highly developed critical thinking, problem solving, and organizational skills.
- Req Facilitation, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Req Ability to foster teamwork across the health system, mentor staff and other leaders in the areas of Quality/Six Sigma/Process Improvement, FMEA, PDCA, DMAIC, Root Cause Analysis and other models of quality improvement and high reliability.
- Req Proven experience in quality management and patient safety in a healthcare setting.
- Req Strong understanding of regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Req Excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
- Req Ability to drive organizational change and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Pref Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Req Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing) Current unrestricted California Registered Nurse (or other clinical) license.
- Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
- Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
- Req Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality - CPHQ (NAHQ) Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality - CPHQ (NAHQ) CPHQ certification required; if not certified must achieve certification within 6 months of hire.
The annual base salary range for this position is $246,471.00 - $406,678.00.
