Kamehameha Schools is seeking a Learning Support Specialist to support our Middle School at our Kapālama Campus. This is a full-time regular position with full-time employee benefits. Job Summary

Provides educational services to students with learning disabilities. Observes, screens, identifies, and monitors students with a variety of learning challenges. Administers appropriate screening instruments to determine cognitive abilities and academic achievement. Coordinates referral of students with suspected disabilities for additional testing/educational evaluation. Modifies, prescribes, and implements strategies as indicated in reports. Provides instruction and specific interventions to group of students that aid their academic learning. Assists teachers with implementing intervention plans through training/workshops/direct aid. Consults/advises faculty and staff on students' academic needs and their learning challenges. May provide extended services to include making home visits, transporting students, and developing resources/services. Assists and supports grade level counselors in course registration, facilitating group activities, and teaching guidance classes.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Observes, screens, identifies, and monitors students with a variety of learning/academic challenges. Administers screening instruments that assess students suspected of having learning disabilities. Coordinates off-campus referrals for students needing educational assessments/evaluations.
  • Advises, consults and collaborates with administrators, counselors, and teachers regarding students' intervention plans and appropriate actions needed to address students' special needs. Assists teachers toward implementing instructional strategies in the classroom. Provides instructional intervention and learning strategies.
  • Develops meaningful goals for student attainment and monitoring of progress toward these goals. Prescribes strategies based upon screening results or educational assessment reports that help students' academic success. Implements strategies and monitors progress.
  • Offers teacher training and/or workshops related to diverse learning strategies and styles.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.

  • Master's Degree (degree and course credits must be earned from a nationally accredited college or university).
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a directly related area.
  • Experience in the assessment of individual's cognitive abilities and academic achievement.
  • Able to administer various screening instruments with students having learning challenges.
  • Able to interpret a variety of diagnostic tests such as WISC, WIAT, Wechsler, Woodcock-Johnson Batteries, and specific tests of language, written expression, etc. as noted in educational assessment reports.
  • Familiarity with diverse teaching strategies (e.g. differentiated instruction, holistic learning, and strategic learning such as memory techniques, chunking, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of community resources to assist students with special needs.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills in order to relate effectively with students, parents, school staff and general public.
  • Demonstrates strong verbal and written skills. Able to write reports clearly and comprehensively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding and sensitivity to the Hawaiian community and culture.
  • General knowledge of neighbor island areas is helpful.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sit, perform desk based computer tasks and grasp light/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, write by hand, and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach/work above shoulder, grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands or the continental U.S. to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours may be required to meet goals and objectives.

Compensation Benefits

Placement in the compensation range outlined below considers highest degree/educational credentials acquired from an accredited institution, and the number of full-time, verified years of eligible and related work experience. Salary is also adjusted to the appropriate work year.
