Kamehameha Schools is searching for a Security Manager to join our Operations leadership team at our Hawaii Campus. This position will oversee a team of 39 employees who are committed to serving the 302-acre campus which is home to 236 faculty and staff and 1170 students K-12.

This is an in-person position which may provide relocation assistance for off-island candidates on an approval basis. 

Job Summary

The Security Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of an effective and efficient 24-hour security plan and assists in administering the campus emergency operations plan for disaster management.  Establishes and implements appropriate investigative procedures for all security incidents, formulates an appropriate prevention and control measure that ensures the incidences of crime are minimized and in accordance with accepted best practices.  Coordinates security and parking requirements in support of various school events that are held on campus.  Provides leadership and management of security staff.  Responsible for the maintenance and utilization of campus communications and surveillance equipment and protocols.  Assists Director of Operations with development, implementation and enforcement of campus facilities use policies.  Works closely with Education Safety and Risk Specialist by monitoring and executing on overall campus safety preparedness as developed by the Safety Manager. 

Essential Responsibilities

Daily Operations

  • Oversees the daily operations of the Security Department, providing managerial leadership, direction and supervision including making hire and discharge recommendations, setting performance standards and expectations. Conducts regular performance reviews, provides counseling and guidance.
  • Allocates resources to meet job schedules, plans, schedules and resolves work flow challenges to ensure the successful delivery of the services requested. Develops new cost effective methods to improve performance.
  • Implements disciplinary actions as warranted, coaches, develops and provides training and motivation to make full utilization of individual capabilities to meet changing workplace demands.
  • Ensures work shift assignments are scheduled and posted in a timely manner.

Security Planning

  • Develops and implements an effective and efficient 24-hour/365 days security plan which encompasses the daily operations of the campus to include major emergencies.
  • Establishes and implements appropriate investigative procedures for all security incidents on campus to include vandalism, trespassing, assaults, illegal narcotics, security threats, thefts, burglary, etc. Follows through with contacting the appropriate legal agency(s).
  • Maintains campus communication and surveillance systems and recommends upgrades in accordance to changing needs and in compliance with best practice.
  • Develops and updates procedures for use of the communication and surveillance systems and ensures that relevant staff are properly trained.
  • Receives all security officer incident and/or investigation reports to ensure accuracy and completeness of fact gathering. Recommends follow-up action as appropriate.

Traffic and Parking Operations

  • Formulates appropriate security requirements as well as vehicular traffic plans and parking operations in support of special events held on campus and in support of school functions held at various off campus locations.
  • Assist campus leadership with the development, implementation and enforcement of the facility use policy. Coordinates campus parking including vehicle registration for staff, students and parents.
  • Enforces campus parking rules and regulations.

Fiscal Management

  • Develops the security department's budget to include the preparation, justification and execution.
  • Controls expenditures, provides justification for variances and makes recommendations for improvement.

Community Relations

  • Represents KS at community and governmental meetings where traffic and security matters are discussed. Receives and follows up on inquiries and complaints from neighbors, staff, students, parents and others as directed. Serves on organization-wide Safety Committee and as a regular member of the Violence Intervention Team.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Security Services, Criminal Investigation or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in security or police related work.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Valid drivers license.

  • Proven experience in procedures and practices in investigations and reporting on incidents and accidents.
  • Proven experience in the development and implementation of effective security plan(s) for one or more locations.
  • Proven experience in emergency management procedures and practices as well as policy development and implementation.
  • Proven experience in developing training policies, procedures and implementation of such to include instruction.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Good interpersonal skills to deal effectively with various audiences (faculty, parents, staff, students, general public, etc.).
  • Good working knowledge of standard security procedures and requirements.
  • Strong working knowledge of ISHA/DOSH, DOT, PUC, ADA, EPA regulations and codes and related requirements.
  • Proven ability to operate and utilize 2-way radio communications and knowledge of procedures in accordance with best practices.
  • Ability to work 24-hours/7-days on call.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in First Aid and CPR with AED.
  • Previous work experience in a public emergency responder agency at a senior command level.
  • Knowledge of the Hawaii Revised Statutes.
  • Knowledge of fire safety code and practice.
  • Knowledge in safety programs, OSHA and HIOSH rules and regulations.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
