Kamehameha Schools Maui is looking for a Religious Education Instructor to support their campus! The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of Biblical truths, working knowledge of technical integration, an understanding of Hawaiian culture and culture-based education, and experience in teaching.   This position will work Monday-Friday 7:30am – 3:30pm, with alternating bell schedules.

Job Summary

Provides classroom instruction to grades K-12 in Religious Education. Develops and prepares appropriate instruction and curriculum materials for program use. Works closely with Chaplain to provide assistance in the planning, development and execution of character and Christian education initiatives. Supports the spiritual and moral growth of all students, through the integration of curriculum and programs consistent with the tenets of the Protestant faith. Implements the religious education program. 

Essential Responsibilities

K-12 Religious Education Program

  • Assess, support, and facilitate the spiritual and moral growth of all students, consistent with tenets of the Protestant religion, through a comprehensive K-12 Christian Education/Ekalesia curriculum.
  • Under the direction of the Chaplain, collaborate with Christian Education, and Ekalesia teachers to develop a related plan and calendar for all chapel activities throughout the year that may relate to curricular activities K-12.

Instruction

  • Facilitates engaging classroom instruction to grades K-12 in Religious Education. Prepares appropriate lesson plans and activities that integrate Hawaiian and Christian values in support of program outcomes. Performs required administrative functions in support of classroom instruction (e.g. grade checks, attendance, student evaluations).

Curriculum and Planning

  • Works closely with the Chaplain to develop and implement devotions for K-12; also participates in special devotions and ceremonies as needed.
  • Provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in spiritual building activities within assigned grade levels.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college.
  • Strong commitment to the Protestant Christian Faith, and to the physical, intellectual, cultural and spiritual well-being of all students, faculty and staff.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to social justice issues, global issues, sustainability, Hawaiian language, history, culture and Christian values.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and/or recent experience with using age appropriate instructional strategies (e.g. differentiated instruction, project-based learning, personalized learning).
  • Ability to utilize, create or develop current technology applications for adaption to classroom and/or instructional use.
  • Excellent interpersonal and writing skills to work with all levels of the school community.
  • Good verbal skills to communicate effectively with students, parents and staff.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment and to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and listen with understanding, compassion, and grace. Possess a high level of communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organization skills, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Understanding and appreciation of other cultural and religious/spiritual beliefs.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, counselors, and school administrators.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with students, colleagues and school administrators and to work collaboratively as a team.
  • Organize tasks and manage time to meet varied deadlines.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required to meet goals and objectives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year of teaching experience in subject area.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian culture and language.
  • Knowledge of the history of the Protestant Christian missionaries/mission, its related denomination successor, and the United Church of Christ.
  • Previous experience working in a school or educational setting.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with students and families within the context of a supportive learning environment
  • Ability to differentiate and personalize instruction to meet varying student needs.
  • Manage small and large groups of students in various instructional environments.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development.
  • General knowledge of Kamehameha Schools and its programs, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian values, culture, and language.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours.

Compensation Benefits

Placement in the compensation range outlined below considers highest degree/educational credentials acquired from an accredited institution, and the number of full-time, verified years of eligible and related work experience. Salary is also adjusted to the appropriate work year.
