Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Campus is looking for an Oiwi Learning and Teaching Mobilizer (OLTM) to join the Elementary School! The Elementary OLTM will provide instructional coaching support to kumu that builds their identity as oiwi-serving educators while also supporting in the development of curriculum and instructional practices. This position will also connect kumu with curated Oiwi-Hawaii resources like moolelo, indigenous texts, and people & organizations in the community, as well as provide direct instruction to haumana via oiwi-infused content.

This is a 2-year Defined Term position with full employee benefits.

Job Summary

Leads the design of a collaborative environment that develops curious minds and critical thinkers, who creatively apply data-driven curriculum and assessment practices through an ʻōiwi lens focused on personalized HCBE competency-based learning. Leads and facilitates task force work to advance personalized HCBE competency-based learning. Co-designs, with campus and division leadership teams, to provide training and coaching to content, grade-level, and K-12 teacher teams with a primary focus on advancing school-wide and divisional curricular and instructional practices that promote personalized HCBE competency-based learning.  Works closely with education division faculty, staff leaders and partners to provide research, data, resources, and tools for advancing new indigenous learning and teaching practices. Provides coaching to other educators as a subject matter expert.

Essential Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Serves as an instructional leader for the structure, content, and delivery of personalized HCBE competency-based teaching and learning, practices, protocols, and systems to support indigenous learning with a strong focus on place-based moʻolelo. 
  • Leads ongoing school improvement processes (e.g., coordination of redesign and accreditation work). Makes recommendations and assists in the formulation of short and long-term goals for campus; assists in the planning and implementation of strategies for meeting goals; prepares materials for workshops and meetings.
  • Oversees a coherent learning experience for students through the development, refinement, and implementation of student learning progressions. 
  • Responsible for curriculum assessment in both instructional and program effectiveness. Prepares annual assessment report, coordinates student assessment to include selection and development of various instruments (norm referenced and curriculum based) and reviews results for student achievement.
  • Collaborates effectively with a variety of stakeholder groups within the organization and with external partners to develop learning that increases student performance, equitable outcomes for every student, and analyze student-achievement data, to contribute to advancing K-12 and division instructional efficacy.

Observation, Coaching, and Training

  • Works collaboratively with the campus and division instructional leadership teams and classroom kumu to achieve E Ola! Learner Outcomes through developmentally appropriate ʻŌiwi Edge learning and teaching strategies and methods.
  • Mentors kumu to support their development as highly effective educators, as measured by the Kumu Competencies, resulting in ʻŌiwi Edge curriculum, personalized learning practices (project/ʻāina based, inquiry), integration of technology, and formative assessment and data literacy that improves student learning.
  • Regularly observes, demonstrates, and shares expertise with teachers, administrators, and evaluators to serve as a faculty-based professional learning ʻŌiwi Edge coach and/or trainer.
  • Demonstrates competence in ʻŌiwi Edge learning and teaching and the ability to lead integrated and interdisciplinary work across the curriculum.
  • Cultivates a growth mindset towards student learning, teaching practice, and personal/collective professional development.
  • Designs and facilitates personalized kumu learning experiences, activities, and courses to establish a culture for ‘Ōiwi Edge teacher growth and professional learning for personalized HCBE competency-based learning.
  • Applies knowledge of adult learning theories with delivery of professional development and coaching strategies to create an environment that fosters innovative and creative learners who have an insatiable thirst for knowledge, personal growth, and being on the “cutting edge” of instructional practice and pedagogy.

Data Analysis and Application

  • Participates with school level leadership in understanding, analyzing, and interpreting student data, as well as using those findings to improve instructional efficacy in support of personalized HCBE competency-based learning.
  • Based on data analysis, applies various methodologies, tools, and measures for indigenous learning including the integration of articulated expectations in various campus programs.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and operationalization of students' learner profile to support decision making for students, teachers, and program.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.

  • Master's Degree earned from a nationally accredited college or university, in Education, Hawaiian Studies, or other related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years related leadership experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience.
  • Leadership of a group, division, or department with kuleana to meet program objectives/goals aligned with designated mission and vision.
  • Experience with managing competitive and conflicted work situations. 
  • Experience with teambuilding and collaborative work processes.
  • Knowledge of and experience with designing and assessing standards-based curriculum and the integration of Hawaiian culture and curriculum (e.g., lesson, units)
  • Knowledge of and experience with applying data-driven and assessment practices focused on personalized HCBE competency-based learning and teaching.
  • Instructional design and planning in culturally-based environments.
  • Structured Project Planning, Execution and Control: Ability to methodically plan, execute and control moderate to high-risk/prioritized initiatives. Able to manage project scope, quality, cost, and schedule to pre-determined constraints.
  • Ability to guide and facilitate long and short-range strategic planning across a cross functional educational organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all stakeholders via face-to-face interactions, electronic and web-based communications.
  • Ability to facilitate small and large group work sessions and bring divergent views into a visionary design and cohesive plan.
  • Skilled in working with various constituent groups—Administrator/Management, Faculty, Educational Support Group – within and beyond KS towards a common vision and goal.
  • Experience working in collaborative teams to achieve desired outcomes and milestones.
  • Work flexible and at times, long hours as necessary and be able to travel frequently.
  • Technologically proficient to efficiently and effectively work with business offices suites and other relevant technology.
  • Ability to be adaptive and shift with job demands and conditions.
  • Must be able to work independently and manage time and work to meet deliverables and outcomes.
  • Self-motivated with the demonstrated ability to take appropriate initiative.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions (including environmental conditions)   

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but may be conducted in evenings and weekends, as necessary.
