Kamehameha Schools is currently looking for a Wildfire and Risk Manager.  The ideal candidate will have extensive education and experience in Emergency and Disaster Management or related field, as well as relationships within the Emergency Response community. This is a Hybrid position which provides work from home flexibility on an approval basis

Job Summary

This position oversees the development and implementation of strategic risk mitigation plans to address a broad spectrum of hazards, including but not limited to wildfires, floods, erosion (such as rock falls), structural failures, tree falls, and environmental contamination.  Requires comprehensive identification, assessment, and management of fire risks and maintaining preparedness for potential incidents across the organization's diverse portfolio, which includes conservation areas, agricultural lands, and commercial real estate assets. 


This role works in close collaboration with various ʻāina stakeholders, ‘Āina Pauahi staff, and community partners applying Best Management Practices (BMP) to achieve effective and sustainable risk management protocols in alignment with organizational objectives and goals.  Coordinates the development and execution of emergency and disaster management efforts and ensuring rigorous compliance with applicable governmental regulations.

Essential Responsibilities
 

Property Risk Analysis, Monitoring and Management

  • Develop and implement comprehensive land management risk mitigation plans addressing key areas such as but not limited to wildfire, flood, erosion (rockfall), structural integrity, tree fall, and environmental contamination.

  • Collaborates with various ʻāina stakeholders, ‘Āina Pauahi staff, community partners, land managers, and stakeholders to formulate and refine Best Management Practices (BMPs) for effective risk management and mitigation.

  • Establish and oversee a thorough risk assessment process to identify and prioritize risk mitigation needs, ensuring alignment with BMPs.

  • Ensure integration of risk management strategies across all planning and assessment efforts to enhance safety and environmental protection within the real estate portfolio.

  • Evaluate areas for risks and vulnerabilities, considering factors like vegetation, climate, and land use.

  • Implement real-time risk monitoring systems and adjust strategies based on trend analysis and data insights.

  • Leads in managing annual budget to manage risk within an assigned area, region, and/or moku.

Crisis Management

  • Develop and implement detailed emergency response plans for high-risk areas, ensuring effective crisis management through proper procedures and resource allocation.

  • Lead and coordinate crisis response efforts, including team mobilization, resource management, and emergency protocol execution to swiftly mitigate impact and restore operations.

  • Oversees disaster management phases, including preparation, response, recovery, and mitigation, ensuring effective coordination with external agencies and stakeholders.

  • Update and maintain emergency response plans through regular reviews and drills, incorporating improvements from lessons learned and evolving risks.


Regulatory Compliance and Training

  • Coordinates with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure effective risk prevention and compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.

  • Regularly update knowledge on evolving environmental regulations and conduct training sessions to implement new policies and ensure compliance across projects and operations.

  • Deliver guidance and training on risk management and fire prevention to staff and stakeholders.

  • Conduct emergency preparedness and response training and drills for staff and community members.

Communication and Reporting

  • Ensure clear and consistent communication of risk management strategies throughout the organization by developing and disseminating detailed guidelines, protocols, and updates.

  • Prepare and present detailed reports on risk management activities and trends to senior leadership and stakeholders.

  • Regularly evaluate mitigation plans and recommend enhancements to ensure their effectiveness and alignment with current best practices and emerging risks.

Position Requirements
 

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Forestry, Emergency Management, or related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in wildfire management, risk assessment, and/or emergency management.

  • Strong knowledge of wildfire behavior, fire ecology, and BMP risk assessment methodologies.

  • Excellent leadership and communication skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to managing challenges.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy

  • Demonstrate ability to manage highly confidential information using ethical conduct and discretion.

  • Ability to read, understand, and create complex maps.

  • Analytical skills to analyze data and generate reports.

  • Ability to work under pressure, make critical decisions during emergencies and maintain professional demeanor under stressful conditions.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively, take initiative, facilitate robust discussion, influence stakeholders, and work independently in a dynamic environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people, including staff members, community partners, and various stakeholders. 

  • Demonstrated strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Working knowledge of computer systems and common software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Web browsers) and familiarity with ArcMap GIS and other database systems.

  • Proficient in using GIS and other relevant software for risk assessment and planning.

  • Commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related discipline or equivalent proven experience and performance.

  • Certification in wildfire and/or emergency management.

  • Strong knowledge and/or experience with agricultural, conservation, ranching and forestry practices and ability to incorporate practices into operational outcomes.

  • Fire Training.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.

  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.

  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.

  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
