Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus is looking for a Lab Assistant to join the Middle School Science team!

Job Summary

Assists science teachers and students by preparing and participating in classroom experiments and activities which include but are not limited to supporting various labs/classes, setting up equipment and supplies for classes and demonstrations, assisting in science stockroom and ensuring stockroom is organized and properly maintained.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepares as directed, various lab solutions and experiments by gathering appropriate materials and supplies for each lab/class session. Ensures solutions and set-ups are ready for use prior to lab/class session. Also sets up equipment for classroom uses and/or demonstrations. Upon end of session, cleans area and re-sets solutions and experiments for next lab/class as appropriate.

  • Collaborates with teachers to refine lab procedures, ensuring the development of compliant practices for the safety of staff and students.

  • Organizes and maintains science stockroom and other storage areas to ensure materials are properly stocked and maintained. Orders replacement and/or new supplies as needed, working with both internal teams and external software/hardware vendors. Recommends alternatives for supplies and materials by working closely with department staff and/or purchasing.

  • Participates in classroom experiments and activities by assisting students and teachers with equipment, chemicals, and supplies. Provides demonstrations, one-on-one instruction, and other learning enhancement support as appropriate. Assists with supervision of students during field trips and other related classroom activities.

  • Performs clerical duties such as placing and receiving calls, taking messages as needed and correcting student assignments and/or test papers.

  • Inventories, controls, and cleans department permanent equipment to ensure proper working order and safety. Makes recommends for disposition of equipment (replace or retire) as appropriate.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - A combination of education and experience may be substituted for the requirements listed.

  • High School graduate or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 2 years of directly related experience including preparation of solutions and setting equipment for lab work.

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Demonstrated understanding of technical or engineering terminology.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of science laboratory materials, equipment, formulas, and techniques and safety precautions in handling and disposing of chemicals.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and teachers, follow through on detailed instructions, prioritize responsibilities and manage multiple assignments, perform basic office skills (e.g., use of spreadsheets, word processing, data management, and presentation applications).

  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills.

  • Must be able to establish rapport with teachers and students.

  • Good organizational skills required to maintain inventory of stockroom's equipment and supplies.

  • Experience with hand and power tools in construction and fabrication of projects designed in wood, aluminum, steel, and plastic.

  • Motivated, self-starter, good work ethnic and good time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college experience in the science field (in lab setting)

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.

  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds.

  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.

  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.

  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours, but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
