Kamehameha Schools is hiring for a Mechanic to support our Transportation department with repairs of all KS vehicles, to include diesel engine buses, trucks, and standard vehicles.

Mechanics are supplied with all tools & uniforms needed for the job.

This is a Full-time position with a Monday-Friday day shift. Pay is $30-33.00/hr (depending on qualifications). We offer a generous and competitive benefits package to include:

This position requires a CDL License with P endorsement. On-the-job, Paid training & certification can be provided to those that do not meet this requirement.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs maintenance, service and repair of both gas and diesel school buses, trucks and passenger vehicles. Responsible for all aspects of repairs and maintenance of fleet vehicles to include drive train, steering, suspension and exhaust systems. Performs periodic maintenance to include changing tires and vehicle inspections, and may perform bodywork and other duties as assigned. Utilizes computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track cost of asset (labor, parts, outsourced repairs, etc.). Conducts all work in accordance with industry standards and manufacturer recommendations.

Essential Responsibilities

Maintenance and Repair

  • Diagnoses and repairs mechanical problems of various vehicles. Repairs may occur at the shop, on campus or on public roadways (in event of breakdowns).
  • Responds to road emergencies (e.g., bus breakdowns) while on shift.
  • Disassembles, overhauls, and reassembles engines transmissions, turbos and other vehicle components. Removes and replaces transmission, rear ends, front ends, air conditioning units, and electrical systems (e.g., alternators, ignitions).
  • Checks and services suspension, brake, fuel, exhausts, and cooling systems as necessary.
  • Performs regularly scheduled maintenance on fleet vehicles, checks and changes fluids (e.g., oil change), and other consumable/wear components (e.g., filters, brakes).
  • Performs body repair work including removing and installing windows, doors, hatches, etc.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License Type B with Passenger (P) endorsement.
  • Experience with automobile computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment and passenger vehicle repairs (chassis, transmission, drive line, hydraulics, tires, etc.).
  • Knowledge of electrical and air systems.
  • Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements (DOT, EPA, etc.).
  • Diagnostic use of laptop computer for troubleshooting computerized engines.
  • Ability to clearly communicate via two-way radio system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASE A-Series (Automotive) Certifications (A1-A8)
  • ASE T-Series (Truck) Certifications (T1-T7)
  • ASE S-Series (School Bus) Certifications (S1-S7)
  • Commercial Driver's license with School Bus (S) endorsement.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Ability to lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to handle physical demands of the job to include, but not limited to squatting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, climbing stairs, and working in cramped or awkward positions.

Working Conditions (including environmental conditions)   

  • Work is conducted in an automotive shop, and work may be required on the school campus or public roadways (in the event of breakdowns).
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday, based on operational needs of the Transportation Department (e.g., early/late hours to support commuter bus schedules).
