Job Summary:
The Bioethics Program Director provides leadership and oversight for the Medical Centers Bioethics Program, including healthcare ethics consultation, policy development, organizational ethics quality activities, and ethics education. The Bioethics Program Director promotes and sustains ethical considerations into the Medical Center environment of care; promotes public and professional awareness of KPs commitment to ethical values; aligns the Bioethics Program with strategic organizational priorities; and contributes to the activities of the SCAL Regional Bioethics Program.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Serves as co-chair of the KP Medical Center Bioethics Committee by providing guidance and leadership to the committee pertaining to healthcare ethics consultation, preventive ethics, policy formulation and providing continuing professional ethics education to committee members

  • Provides healthcare ethics consultation throughout the continuum of care, working collaboratively with healthcare providers, patients, and surrogate decision-makers to deliver high quality and sensitive consultation to patients and their loved ones

  • Provides ethics related education to the service area throughout the continuum of care

  • Engages in preventive ethics activities and initiatives as negotiated with leadership and/or appropriate stakeholders, consistent with established mechanisms for documentation and reporting

  • Analyzes and improves healthcare ethics consultation methods, approaches, and ethics quality improvement in collaboration with Regional Bioethics Program

  • Participates in hospital rounds as appropriate and provides advice, guidance and education to clinical staff regarding ethical questions related to patient care and treatment

  • Develops and reviews policies, consistent with pertinent regulatory standards, relevant legal guidance and current ethical norms, in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders

  • May provide ethics related education and outreach to the local, state, national, international professional community.

  • Represents the Medical Center at KP SCAL Regional Committee on Bioethics and manages projects for the Southern California Region


    • Provides consultation to those committees, departments, or staff in need of ethics advice or review as indicated by leadership, or as identified by the Bioethics Director

    Basic Qualifications: Experience

    • Minimum two (2) years of experience as the primary consultant in conducting healthcare ethics consultations (could include fellowship year(s)including serving as primary author of ethics consultation documentation in the medical record

    • Minimum one (1) year of experience as Chair or Co-Chair of a hospital ethics committee, or demonstrated substantial leadership in a hospital ethics committee, such as leading policy development, ethics education, or ethics quality projects

    • Minimum two (2) years of demonstrated teaching experience

    Education
    • Masters Degree in a healthcare related field, including but not limited to Ethics, Nursing, Philosophy, Social Work, or Theology
    • Evidence of coursework in healthcare ethics
    License, Certification, Registration

    Additional Requirements:
    • Documentation of three (3) de-identified healthcare ethics case consultations.
    • Demonstrated experience collaborating with multiple disciplines in a healthcare environment
    • Knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods of healthcare ethics consultation and ethics program development to analyze, evaluate, and provide expert advice and consultation, as well as direction and guidance on critical and complex ethical issues (clinical, organizational and research).
    • Must be able to analyze practical problems, explain and justify recommendations and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
    • Essential abilities to include strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, a tolerance for ambiguity and an understanding of clinical processes and problem-solving.
    • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Four (4) years experience as the primary consultant in conducting healthcare ethics consultations (could include fellowship year(s) including serving as primary author of ethics consultation documentation in the medical record
    • Four (4) years experience as Chair or Co-Chair of a hospital ethics committee, or demonstrated substantial leadership in a hospital ethics committee, such as leading policy development, ethics education, or ethics quality projects
    • Healthcare Ethics Consultant Certified (HEC-C) credential preferred
    • Doctorate (including M.D. or J.D.) in a healthcare related field, with fellowship experience in Healthcare Ethics
