The purpose of the position will be to maintain the integrity of the master patient index and facilitate synchronization with other systems throughout the Medical Center.

The position will focus on maintaining accuracy for the master patient index, assuring documentation in the medical record is transferred to the correct patient and/or account based on the merge procedures. The individual will also be responsible for assuring all merges are done timely based on system parameter, charging and other factors including that impact patient care, legal, compliance and revenue. The individual is responsible for:

  • Maintaining systems for identifying individuals with more than one medical record number or medical record numbers applied to more than one patient.
  • Maintain procedures for selecting the surviving medical record number and merging duplicate numbers and documents
  • Maintain communication to departments on status of merges within the organization including departments that use external systems, assuring synchronization of indices throughout the organization
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of electronic and manual merging of duplicates
  • Develop, monitor and maintain reports to track the number of duplicates created, their origin, the number of duplicates corrected
  • Participate in meetings with departments to find root cause analysis
  • Report the activities, findings and actions of the MPI duplicate minimization efforts to the HIM Committee for performance improvement initiatives
  • Work with the Revenue Integrity team to assure all charges are moved to the correct account and notes are placed in systems to reflect changes
  • Assist with writing policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned.
