PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

  • Supervise a territory of gilt future breeding stock in nurseries and finishers. 
  • Provide training and education to caretakers and grower on their assigned production sites. 
  • Ensure all multiplication animals are being raised to optimize gilt health, productivity, and performance.
  • Drive proper gilt selection for future breeding stock; and channel information to proper gilt developer units, sow farms, and management.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide direction and leadership to multiplication managers, care-takers, and technicians regarding production strategies, herd health issues, feed management, facility management, and employment issues according to protocols set forth by the senior management. 
  • Conduct routine site visits ensuring management team is giving proper care and management to animals and following all Iowa Select Farm animal well-being policies.
  • Routinely audit all sites to ensure biosecurity parameters are in place, implemented correctly, and followed daily.
  • Select gilts that will be the future breeding stock for Iowa Select Farms and identify the non-select animals that will be culls, lights, or markets.
  • Ensure weekly specified health monitoring is occurring correctly.
  • Monitor overall health of pigs and communicate with Staff Veterinarian and Director on what is happening in the field.
  • Ensure gilts are correctly vaccinated and medicated according to health needs of the system and direction of multiplication herd veterinarian.
  • Assist in coordinating gilt selection and logistic information between transportation and production teams. 
  • Ensure that all transportation biosecurity is being followed for unloading and loading gilts.
  • Ensure caretakers, managers, and growers are loading gilts and handling gilts correctly.
  • Ensure employees are trained to work in a safe manner, using personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
  • Keep employees motivated to perform at a high level to achieve production results which might require creating and executing action plans based off audit results. 
  • Understand and troubleshoot alarm systems and calls and ensure a response is initiated for 100% of these calls, acting as a backup to site managers on all alarm calls
  • Understand daily production numbers and factors that impact those goals as well as the steps the farm is taking to achieve those goals.
  • Understand company production and incentive packages and motivate employees to achieve these results.
  • Promote and demonstrate safe animal handling practices.
  • Ensure farm managers have the necessary training, supplies and tools to provide proper swine care.
  • Work with managers to oversee the cleanliness and operation of facilities to confirm: 
  • Fans, curtains, heaters, and other equipment are working properly.
  • Ventilation equipment is adjusted to provide proper environment.
  • Facilities are kept clean, including power washing and disinfecting.
  • Train farm managers and technicians to manage ventilation controls and troubleshoot ventilation issues. 
  • Train site managers to monitor all nutrient storage facilities and to report issues immediately.
  • Train site managers to identify animals needing timely euthanasia along with how to properly euthanize in accordance with the Iowa Select Farms protocols. 
  • Perform snow removal at designated sites or when emergency situations arise.
  • The three key expectations listed below are all tracked via audits, you play a critical role in the success of audits for the entire farm which also impacts incentive payouts.
  • Follow company guidelines for vehicle usage
  • Able to work well and collaborate with other departments within the company. Being friendly, positive, helpful, team-oriented, and respectful to co-workers and the management team is essential to success in this role. 
  • Attendance is critical. Be at work on scheduled days and be ready to walk into barns by the start time given.
  • Flexibility in hours during health challenges and staffing challenges is required.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the company.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • This position directly supervises employees/contract owners and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is performed indoors.
  • This position may require some tasks to be performed in outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibrations.  
  • The environment you will be working will have nuisance levels of gasses and dust, particularly in the winter months 
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • This position may require some travel and overnight stays.

 

PHYSICALITY REQUIREMENTS

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.  
  • The employee must be able to continuously repeat necessary movements such as bending, lifting and different hand movements as needed to complete tasks
  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift at least 40 pounds and remove mortality weighing up to 300 lbs. with farm supplied tools.
  • Ability to climb over gates up to 48 inches in height 

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • This is a full-time position that will require a minimum of 40 hours per week 
  • Occasional evening hours and weekend work may be required as job duties demand
  • Additional availability may be required during staffing challenges 

 

TRAVEL

  • Regular travel will be required for this position which entails the utilization of a company vehicle

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and OTHER QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Previous management/supervisory experience in swine operations is preferred
  • Computer literacy is important with competencies in Microsoft Office and ability to learn and become proficient in utilizing Iowa Select Farms online databases.
