A day in the life of an Obstetric Technician at Hackensack Meridian includes:
- Assists and supports nursing staff with provision of direct and indirect care to the patient. Follows the plan of care as
directed by the RN - Orders and stocks all supplies for OR, PACU, Labor Rooms and related areas such as warmers, scrub sinks, OR ante-
room. Maintains readiness of instruments and supplies for OR and vaginal deliveries. - Maintains sterile technique in the operative area including proper scrub, gown and glove techniques. Arranges the
operative table appropriately. Passes instruments and maintains accurate sponge and instrument counts. - Assists surgeons in the operating room with procedures such as Cesarean Section, Hysterectomy, Dilation and
Curettage, manual removal of placenta, and repair of cervical laceration. - Communicates patient information or potential problems to the nurse throughout the shift. Reports timely and
accurate changes in the patient's condition. - Makes rounds and responds to patient/family requests for assistance in a timely manner. Promptly answers call lights
regardless of who is assigned to care for the patient. - Collaborates to ensure patient belongings are promptly stored and valuables are safe. Ensures all belongings are
properly gathered, labeled with patient identification and are sent with the patient who is discharged, transferred or
expired. - Exercises calm behavior and utilizes appropriate judgment while working in a team approach during emergency
situations. Appropriately participates during crisis situations. Isolates and removes other patients and family members.
Assists with and reassures patients and families. Stays with a patient in need. - Demonstrates appropriate use of and care for equipment and supplies. Follows procedures and ensures equipment is
ready to use. - Provides for effective and safe patient/customer outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions. Adheres
to current NJ Department of Health regulations, JCAHO and institutional policies and procedures, and promotes professional ethics/standards. Clinical practice accurately reflects Code of Ethics, the New Jersey Department of Health
regulations. - Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior
- Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 25 lbs. and stands a minimum of 8 hours a day.
- Contacts: Regular contact with medical personnel and its visitors.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification
- Certified Surgical Technician or Certified OB Technician (or provides evidence of meeting the requirements of the NJ
Surgical Technology Certification law in effect as of 12/21/2011)
