Description

​The Academic Coordinator oversees the daily operations and functions of the Academic Support Programs for assigned athletic teams and other assigned student-athletes. Assists the Assistant Athletic Director – Academic Services and the Assistant Athletic Director – Compliance and Life Skills Development to administer developmental and support programming for all student-athletes. This position will develop and maintain strong communication with supervisor, peers, internal and external constituents, coaches, administrators, faculty, and the Faculty Athletics Representative. ​

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position is $54,882 annually. The internal full salary range is $54,882 – $74,253.

Essential Functions

  • ​Work with a caseload of student-athletes one-on-one or in small groups to implement personalized learning strategies and techniques as part of an overall plan for academic success including study skill development, weekly/daily time management schedules, note taking, and critical reading support.
  • Track the academic performance of all assigned student-athletes, which may include the collection of syllabi, weekly/daily objectives, weekly/regular meetings, study tables, and progress reports, while promoting academic responsibility.
  • Create and distribute missed class letters for all assigned student-athletes.
  • Respond to Faculty inquiries regarding student-athletes' academic performance, attendance, and/or other concerns.
  • Assists with referral and support services for student-athletes with a diagnosed learning disability. ​
  • ​Follow NCAA Bylaws, University policy, and West Coast Conference standards to monitor the academic eligibility, degree progression, and academic performance of assigned student-athletes.
  • Monitor and report academic performance of all assigned student-athletes. ​
  • ​Provide academic advisement and support for assigned student-athletes.
  • Collaborate with faculty advisors during registration to plan class schedules that align with graduation requirements and missed class predictions to best set up students for success.
  • Provide assistance for academic planning and major/career exploration for student-athletes. Collaborate with campus partners in the registration of designated freshman student-athletes.​
  • Serve as Peer Tutorial Program Coordinator which is responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training staff of peer tutors to meet the academic demands of our student-athletes. Also responsible for maintaining database of tutor appointments and tutor reports, as well as timesheet approval for student employees
  • ​Co-instruct New Athlete Orientation course during the fall semester. ​
  • Assist campus partners in the planning, registration, coordination, orientation, and monitoring of assigned student-athletes during the University's summer programming.
  • Assist prospective student-athletes during recruitment, meet with prospects and/or families during campus visits, evaluate transcripts for initial eligibility or transfer eligibility, identify concerns and create action plans to resolve eligibility issues.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty, faculty advisors, and other University departments.
​Employees of Gonzaga University's Athletic Department must comply with all NCAA rules and regulations, and acknowledge this compliance as part of an evaluation process.​ At all times and in all positional duties compliance with NCAA rules and regulations must be maintained. The amount of work dedicated to compliance-related tasks may vary by role and responsibility level.

Other Functions

  • Assists other members of the Athletic department during peak periods and with special workload projects.
  • Incumbent may represent the department on University-wide committees or projects as assigned and approved by the supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of work experience in academic advising or instruction at university level. Five (5) years of experience may be substituted in lieu of education requirement.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and work effectively with a diverse group of student-athletes and work effectively with a diverse staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization and problem solving skills, and an ability to communicate with numerous University constituencies in an effective manner to clearly explain options and solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with a high level of confidentiality and discretion.
  • Ability to: Work in a time sensitive, team-oriented, collaborative environment with irregular hours, including nights and weekends; Problem solve, think creatively and organize; Have a sense of urgency and work well under pressure; exercise good judgement, flexibility, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
  • Evening and weekend work is required.


Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years professional work experience in academic advising or instruction at university level.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Experience with NCAA Compliance Assistant internet database.
  • Experience with BANNER student records system.
  • Familiarity with Gonzaga University catalog, academic requirements, and policies and procedures.
