Responsible to set up, operate, or tend milling or planning machines to mill, plane, shape, groove, or profile metal or plastic work pieces. A job as a Tooling Technician falls under the broader career category of Milling and Planning Machine Setters, Operators, and Tenders, Metal and Plastic.

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Position and secure work pieces on machines, using holding devices, measuring instruments, hand tools, and hoists.
  • Remove work pieces from machines, and check to ensure that they conform to specifications, using measuring instruments such as microscopes, gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Select and install cutting tools and other accessories according to specifications, using hand tools or power tools.
  • Select cutting speeds, feed rates, and depths of cuts, applying knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics.
  • Observe milling or planning machine operation and adjust controls to ensure conformance with specified tolerances.
  • Verify alignment of work pieces on machines, using measuring instruments such as rules, gauges, or calipers.
  • Move controls to set cutting specifications, to position cutting tools and work pieces in relation to each other, and to start machines.
  • Replace worn tools, using hand tools, and sharpen dull tools, using bench grinders.
  • Study blueprints, layouts, sketches, or work orders to assess work piece specifications and to determine tooling instructions, tools and materials needed, and sequences of operations.
  • Compute dimensions, tolerances, and angles of work pieces or machines, according to specifications and knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics.
  • Turn valves or pull levers to start and regulate the flow of coolant or lubricant to work areas.
  • Move cutters or material manually or by turning hand wheels, or engage automatic feeding mechanisms to mill work pieces to specifications.
  • Record production output.
  • Make templates or cutting tools.
  • Mount attachments and tools such as pantographs, engravers, or routers to perform other operations such as drilling or boring.
  • Sets-up and operate all conventional tool room machinery to manufacture and repair gages, tooling, and cathodes.
  • Precisely handworks cathodes and performs coating operations on cathodes and tools.
  • Completes routers properly with inspection information for each part run, if applicable, and uses logbooks to communicate between shifts.
  • Perform routine maintenance for machine performance to prevent potential problems.
  • Assemble new tools, gages, and cathodes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
