First Student is hiring a Shop Manager serving Bozeman School District!
We're looking for a hands-on Shop Manager to oversee day-to-day fleet maintenance operations and lead a team of skilled technicians. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a high-impact environment, values continuous improvement, and is passionate about vehicle diagnostics and team development.
As a Shop Manager, you'll be responsible for supervising maintenance activities for our fleet of busses. You'll work closely with regional leadership to ensure compliance, efficiency, and performance goals are met—all while playing a key part in developing talent and driving operational excellence.
Salary: $93,600 annually + $.25/hr ASE bonus
Responsibilities:- Lead and schedule fleet maintenance operations; oversee diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance
- Hire, train, develop, and evaluate technician staff; manage performance, discipline, and team dynamics
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations
- Monitor and manage maintenance budgets, vendor invoices, and repair orders
- Partner with dispatch and operations teams to ensure vehicle availability and service coordination
- Order parts, fuel, and subcontract repair work as needed
- Identify and implement cost-saving and efficiency-enhancing initiatives
- Perform hands-on mechanical work as needed
Requirements:
- 5+ years of mechanical supervisory experience (fleet or diesel preferred)
- Strong diagnostic skills, especially in alternative fuel systems (propane a plus)
- ASE certifications highly preferred
- Solid communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Must hold a valid CDL with required endorsements
- Comfortable working in physically demanding shop environments (lifting up to 50 lbs, working under vehicles, etc.)
- Proficiency in basic computer systems for maintenance tracking
