Introducing the Labor and Delivery Specialty Program

The RN Plus Labor and Delivery Program provides a pathway for Acute Care Registered Nurses to transition into the Labor and Delivery Specialty. 

16 - Week training for experienced RNs

• Six (6) weeks of interactive classroom discussions, case studies, hands-on skills training, and simulations with experienced clinical instructors

• Ten (10) weeks of unit-based clinical preceptorship

Interactive classroom lectures/discussions

• Curriculum-based on evidence-based practice, National Standards and HCA Healthcare Clinical Standards of Excellence

• Basic Dysrhythmia

• ARC Basic Life Support / ARC Advanced Life Support

• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) • S.T.A.B.L.E. Certification

• Meditech and CPN (EHR) hands-on training

• Labor and Delivery medication management

• Communication Tools based on TeamSTEPPS®

• AIDET, SBAR, Patient Experience, Fall Prevention, and more

AWHONN Perinatal Orientation Education Program (POEP) Core Curriculum – Online lessons covering a wide range of topics relevant to Labor and Delivery Nursing

Hands-on Labor and Delivery skills training, that includes but not limited to:

• IV and Phlebotomy

• Indwelling catheter, NG and PEG tube

• Electronic Fetal Monitoring

• Blood Administration

• IV and Epidural Pump management

• Obstetrics High Risk Medication

• APGAR/Bishop Score

Five Days of high-fidelity simulation

• Labor and Delivery - specific scenarios

• Comprehensive facilitated video debriefing


  • Graduation from an accredited school of Registered Nursing is required
  • Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state which you practice and/or hold an active Compact/Multi-State RN license

  • A current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider is required
  • 2+ years of RN experience
  • Attendance is imperative and 100% mandatory

The RN Plus Labor and Delivery program provides a pathway for the experienced RN to transition into the clinical practice with a strong core of nursing fundamentals and critical thinking skills
