The SFVAHCS is a complex medical facility and one of the premier institutions in the VA system. It is a major training site across multiple disciplines, and perennially ranks as the first or second among VAs in the country in terms of research funding. The SFVAHCS MHS provides comprehensive mental health care, including a 12-bed locked psychiatric unit (expected to reopen in September 2023), at the San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC) and seven outpatient clinics in Northern California.
