Level 3 Wing A (L3WA) Medical Specialty Care Unit

The Unit Nurse Manager plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates the operational, fiscal and personnel activities to ensure the provision of high quality, safe patient/family centered care 24 hours a day. Advocates for and allocates available resources to promote efficient, effective, safe and compassionate nursing care.

L3WA Medical Specialty Care Unit is a brand new, state of the art 16-bed progressive care unit in our new Patient Pavilion. L3WA will care primarily for medically complex patients on the hospital medicine service. As a building block in terms of patient acuity, as well as professional development, to our 53-bed Medicine unit, we are poised to provide a dynamic learning and team based environment for both new and experienced care providers. Inpatient medicine cares for patients of all ages and diagnoses with complex patient needs and high acuity as our specialty. Whether you want to support patients with chronic illness, acute illness, surgical consultation, or infectious disease, you will be helping them all on L3WA. The team is built with an established leadership team ready to support the growth and expansion of this service line, giving those that join our team the ability to shape the unit culture. Responsibilities
  1. Manages the hiring process to meet anticipated staffing needs.
  2. Plans adequate staffing and adjustments in alignment with patient volume and clinical needs.
  3. Evaluates and manages the performance of staff members, to include coaching and the performance management processes.
  4. Manages the matrix relationships, including but not limited to providing input and feedback to Nurse Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Clinical Nurse Leaders assigned to the practice area, to ensure clinical competency of staff, quality of patient/family centered care and professional development of clinical staff.
  5. Identifies opportunities for best practices and continued improvement and oversees implementation of such practices.
  6. Responsible for operationalizing best practices in team care coordination.
  7. Proactively accesses safety risks and promotes and models a culture of safety.
  8. Manages staff and processes to achieve outcomes and organizational goals in regard to clinical quality, patient safety, and patient experience.
  9. Manages to operational budget for the unit. Monitors patient revenues and expenses and operational expenses and provides required reports to administration.
  10. Ensures that unit facilities and equipment meet necessary standard and monitors utilization of equipment.
  11. Facilitates the work of the Professional Nursing Organization, including facilitating the Practice Area Council. Coaches clinical nurses in professional development and engagement in the Program for Advancing Clinical Excellence (PACE) credentialing program.
  12. Assures that Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory standards are met in the clinical area. Assures that evidenced based practice and nursing practice standards are achieved in the clinical area.
  13. Assumes accountability for maintaining a safe work environment in alignment with Dartmouth-Hitchcock's commitment to employee safety and regulatory requirements including but not limited to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and applicable state and federal law.
  14. Supports and/or participates in clinical research programs in collaboration with the interprofessional team.
  15. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program required.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) is required.
  • Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory and/or management experience required.
  • 5 years of progressive responsibility within an acute care setting required.
  • Must obtain and maintain clinical competencies within assigned unit.
