Job Summary:

Assists in planning, delivery and evaluation of patient care within scope of practice for a registered nurse. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/department's policies and procedures.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and monitor patients' progress, identifying sudden or subtle changes in their medical condition.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, patients, and their families, responding to medical emergencies.
  • Provide continuous care for patients throughout their recovery in the ICU.
  • Base practice decisions on departmental/state standards of practice, seeking input from others when needed. Attend all in-services, take accountability for own practice, and complete mandatory education without intervention.
  • Actively seek educational opportunities to enhance professional practice, maintaining a current clinical knowledge base and skills. Participate in activities that facilitate intra/interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Demonstrate the ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems, identifying and communicating subtle changes in patient conditions. Develop comprehensive care plans for each patient and utilize multidisciplinary resources in planning care.
  • Act as a teacher for patients and families, sharing knowledge with peers. Delegate tasks appropriately, verify completion, and maintain an organized and calm demeanor.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to differentiate between situations requiring immediate versus non-immediate actions. Utilize nursing knowledge in medication administration and evaluation of effectiveness.
  • Promptly resolve patient care and departmental situations within the scope of responsibility, referring problems beyond that scope to appropriate individuals.
  • Bring ideas and questions about professional practice to the unit for assessment of applicability. Assist with data collection in research studies and incorporate new skills into practice.

Qualifications / Skills/ Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program
  • Current NH RN License
  • BLS, ACLS Certified
